I am not looking to buy one but am always interested in the low dollar NEW car.
I will need to buy my own car for work next March and I like to build this stuff in my head as I drive around selling hoses and expansion joints.
Can you can "build" a base model and throw parts at it to make it like the 1984-1985 Rabbit?
The car is on ebay for $18,000 and The Tire Rack has new suspension to lower it for $650. Find some other parts; exhaust, header, tires, wheels...........5-cylinder, 5-speed, 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds........is this the old Rabbit NEW?
Can you do the same thing that GRM did with the BMW M3 build they did? Would this be a fun car? Or what about the Mazda 2? 3? Sentra? Civic? Mini?

The exhaust grumble of the I-5 is worth the price of admission--especially with a nice aftermarket exhaust. Great interior too...
Actually Ken83GTi is pretty impressed with the new car. I only have a few miles in one and the Golf 2 door is pretty nice.
I will be surprised if there are not a few stock class cars running up in the top of their class at the end of the year.
I do not like the cost but what you get for the money is pretty impressive.
Hmmm... $18,000 you say? I think we can do a wee bit better than a base model VAG car...
How about an STi for $16K?
If you insist on VW, how about an actual GTI for $16K?
Or you could step up to a real 911 for the same $16K.
You could also get a Jaaaaaaag for that kind of dough.
Have to stick with small 2-door? How about a Mini Cooper S?
Or you could drop the top on a Boxster S.
Although personally, I would probably get this sweeeet Charger for the same money...
Basically, $18,000 can buy you a lot of not-brand-new car...
Golf/GTI is great if you want everyone to think you're a 17-year old high school kid. I'd say 95% of them in this area are driven by them...
Which leads me to my next question: Why does every 17-year old high school kid in a stock GTI in this area feel the need to try and street race me? What, they beat all the civic si's and want to know how losing feels?
If you want to look like a teenager, at least get something cool and fast: $10k RSTi.....$6k left for track fees...
Tank.
If you wanted a heavy car with a 5 cylinder, buy the cleanest ur-S4/S6 you could find. They even come pre-turbocharged!
You could find a VERY nice example for half of $18k. Sock the rest away and use it to keep it nice. All too many of them get parted out for their drivetrains to get stuffed into small-chassis cars.
I just drove one 500 miles to Roebling Road and back and honestly thought the four door standard new Golf with automatic was a nice driving, nicely screwed together, comfortable car. You could do a lot worse.
Actually I am going to pickup a Police Tahoe or Crown Vic in the $5,000 range and bank as much as I can of my car allowance. I just like to dream about little pocket rockets.

Try going to a VW. You get all of those people together in one place at the same time. There is also a split of younger people with water-cooled cars and older people with acvw stuff. I don't mind and I hang with both groups but the acvw group is less annoying.

lol...well, I drive a subaru, so it's not like our meets are much different :D Then again, I don't go to many parking lot meets, unless said parking lot is hosting an autocross.
You guys should go to an all-AMC meet...
In my area, the only folks you see driving VW products in any great number are the women driving Jetta sedans. Once in a great while you see a Passat or a Jetta wagon (I actually sort of like the newest Jetta wagon) and very rarely the Golf. It's like the ads for the (new) Rabbit died...and so did the demand for a hatchback Golf/Rabbit.
Not to sway too far from the OT but anyone have any thoughts on the new TDI golfs? Haven't had a chance to drive one but the package sounds appealing.
If your looking for MPG, walk away. I loved my 2004 4 door golf (with the 2.sl0w to boot), but for the measly 115hp it had, it got at best the same gas mileage as my '99 2.5RS did (which had more power, was faster, handled better, looked better, and was more fun to drive the worse the conditions got).
I hang around VW's and Audi's all day... you don't buy them for their n/a goodness, as there isn't much to write home about.
The 2.5L stick will get an honest 30mpg. Driving them to Columbus and back we average 33 in the Jettas. I can't imagine a car weighing 400lbs less will be worse.

how about a link to the sale on this one???
I do agree with the annoyance factor of the younger guys in the watercooled VDubs.. I am not sure why, but the stereotype is in full swing here
As a somewhat young guy that drives around like a jackass in a fast and noisy MKV GTI, I totally agree with the above statement.

If you look hard enough, you can find E39 M5s in the sub-16K range.

My Golf attracts the same attention as Scott's Type R. If we wanted to pick up tattooed boytoys, we'd be set.
with the new 2010 GTi, VW has an ECU block on them, so there is no way of flashing software on them. We are currently able to crack open the ECUs and jump pins to get them to start reading some files, but yea, software is getting pricey for the 2010 models.
I'm seriously considering a new clean burn diesel ... will have to find a serious buyer for my Integra and make the TDI my "last" car ... maybe
