On the 500, if the light doesn't illuminate because of the duty cycle/oil life monitor thing, it'll illuminate at 8k miles. I had mine changed the first time (for free) at 7600 miles at the dealership. I wouldn't bother doing an early change.

As so many others have said; follow the manual. If anything goes wrong, you certainly want to have been following the manual...

And I definitely wouldn't think that some guy on the Internet's second-hand advice from a dealer would trump the manual.

Wally wrote: The owners manual was fairly vague, wait for the light to come on, use 5w-30. No hint at a mileage or anything about what type of oil beyond weight and not to use a non-detergent oil. My biggest concern was that I had read on a couple different sites that people were told by their dealers not to use synthetic. I've had very good luck with synthetic and planned to use it and couldn't find a reason why people were told not to. I had heard that VW and BMW had some kind of special rating for some of their oils so I didn't want to use the wrong type and have a problem.

This is why I wrote about talking to the dealer service guys directly. Not all owners manuals are created equally.

Wally, you could talk to the regional service office and get their take on the proper oil.

You know, I can't remember the last time I changed the oil in the Miata. I should get on that.
