Round Lake Heights used car guy has a manual 5 series wagon with rust bubbles(holes?) in the normal places. I'm terrified of rust and flying to Chicago, train 2 hrs to RLH to buy a car with visible rust and driving 13 hrs home is my idea of a nightmare waiting to happen. If there was another one id pass. Same request as my Detroit thread, dinner, drinks, gas, name it, especially if we can get together in person when I'm (hopefully) there
Cheers,
Jim 334 202 627 five
It's about 1.5 hours from me, and I wouldn't be able to do it until next weekend, but if you get in a pinch let me know.
A 3 hour round trip plus checking out a car is way more than I would ask, but thank you. If you find yourself near Round Lake Heights for something else though.......
I'm less than 20 minutes away. If it can hold till Friday or Saturday, I can give it a look.
WOOHOO! You are awesome for even offering. My cell is in the thread and I'll link the ad if I can. Address is 1223 W Rollins Rd RLH, 60073. Stan Imports
Ill.let you know what the end of the week looks like when it gets closer to Friday.

you realize that is a car dealership, right? In my experience, if the price is low on a car at a dealer, the car has issues. YMMV

In Illinois "a little rust" means a lot more hidden away. I'd walk away but that's me and the fact that I've live here my whole life and seen what midwest winters do to a car.
That's where someone else's eyes are key. I'll let the pictures help him decide.
I understand but there aren't any others out there. 2.8 manual, low miles, one owner, clean Carfax, zero reported accidents and it passed emissions first try every year since new. It's really my only choice or I wouldn't even offer myself up for the "cars up here suck, you're nuts for even trying"
The pics on eBay showed more than the ad. The car didn't sell, it had 3 or 4 bids and didn't reach the reserve of less than 3 grand and he's dropped the price every week. It's a rare car because there's a small market......and it me!

Maybe oldtin will chime in, this is probably about 10 minutes from him, and he's fairly well versed in BMW's and wagons. If not I could ask my brother to check it out, he's about 20 minutes away--and has some experience with BMW's
I would be hesitant just because it's in RLH. Not exactly an area with a lot of BMW buyers, and an area with a lot of buy here-pay here type dealers. I'm not familiar with this particular dealership, but the yelp reviews don't impress me either.

Oh, and Illinois emissions isn't that hard to pass. I wouldn't put too much stock in that.
Illinois emmissions is basically a check engine light test.
I've lived in Illinois since 1962.
Didn't know there was an emissions test.....
Must be a Chicago thing.

Chicago area counties and east St. Louis.
In Alabama there are zero checks of any kind. Straight headers on a big block? No problem. 36" rims or 44" tires with a 4 foot plus bumper height? No problem. Things like trailer lights, turn signals, sideview mirrors, children in a restraint of any kind are not seemingly required. We see people driving trucks that are A shaped from a wreck, no windshield, cars wrecked so badly the passenger door is near the center console and held shut with packing tape. Here it's a miracle when someone has a tag that goes with the car, insurance of any sort, some kind of license and is sober enough to find any of them.

I had an accord. Paid $700 for it. Cleared the codes, then drove until the monitor said emissions ready. The second it was, I was at the testing facility. I think it was 3 miles after my monitor said emissions ready that I was there. The check engine light came back on literally as I left the parking lot.
Also, they don't mess with OBDI, or older. The 87 4Runner never was tested. So 95 and older, you're safe.
Bump in the hopes that Oldtin will respond
Still grateful and hopeful that Appleseed can go in the next few days though
In reply to Justjim75 :

Awe, man. I'm sorry I couldn't get out there quicker.
It's nice to have you and the GRM community to help with these things. Thank you
