Just an FYI. My parents were almost scammed today. Someone pretending to be my nephew called to ask for bail money saying he was at a wedding and was in an accident and was arrested. Sounds a lot like the IRS tax scam going around. That one has been mostly shut down. Just pass the word. Luckily my parents called my sister first. She told them it was BS.

What's your nephew's name? That way I know it's a scam when he calls me.

Yea, I heard about that one on the Clark Howard show recently.

Another one to be aware of - the IRS scam has now morphed to the crooks sending out letters now (which is the only legit way the real IRS will initially contact you if there is a real issue), that supposedly look just like the real IRS letters. At this point, the only way to verify if the letter is real is to call the IRS (and probably wait on hold for a while) and verify the "inquiry" validity.

Scam crap seems to have no end ....

The fake arrested grandson scam has been around for a very long time- used to be money wired for bail, please don't tell mom and dad.

That one almost got my Grandparents last year, A woman called, said she was their granddaughter (my cousin) and she needed money fast, to get out of where ever she was.... Smarter heads prevailed, and a quick call to my Aunt cleared it up, but my Grandparents were flabbergasted by how much info the scammer seamed to have. We all told them its not hard to find anymore.

Another one is that you have won a huge prize but there is a fee attached.

I just tell them I won't pay any fee. I don't hear from them again. At least for a time.

I always ask for a tittie shot to prove they're real. Unfortunately no one has sent me any yet.

I got hit with a new one: 3 obscure publications that I'd never heard of were all carrying a sports story that boded poorly for my favorite team. I opened one up and there were pop-ups all over. Started reading the article and a crappy piece of ransomware locked up my browser. It was pretty easy to get out of, but by father-in-law would have freaked out.

Had an old one pop back up a couple days ago. Someone with a accent called and said my computer has just been hacked and hijacked by a virus. He got excited when I exclaimed "oh no, not a virus!" He said yes and we have to fix it. I then asked him how it got hacked if it was turned off. He mumbled something about turned off computers and quickly hung up.

Asking questions will solve most of your problems. One, you'll soon know if it's a scam by a lack of answers or two, they'll hang up when the see you're on to them.

Asking asinine questions FTW. When your line of questioning makes you laugh, even better!

the real IRS tried to scam me... I owed around $500 on my state taxes, which i sent them a check and the money got removed from my bank account. about 2 months later they send a letter saying i still owe the $500 to state. I looked back at my bank account and saw where the $500 had originally been taken out. I guess i wrote the wrong year on the check which meant it didnt go toward what i owed but they still cashed it, and now since it didnt go to the right place they still wanted there $500. Once i told them that it had been cashed on there end they found out what happened and moved the money to what i owed.

What really got me was the fact that they cashed my check which didnt go toward what i owed then came at me asking for the money. They were more then willing to take another $500 from me and never bring up the previous $500 which ended up who-knows-where. When i asked where the original money i sent went they didnt have an answer...
