I'm betting it's going to have solid-state lithium batteries. This is the next generation of battery tech that's being put in production EVs that are in development.

The specs are otherworldly, and I do like the look. It's umistakably a Tesla somehow, something in that rear quarter just screams it. I'll be excited to see these come out!

I'll never be able to afford one but I'm glad they're making it and pushing the limits of the tech. How many years till we can expect to see this level of performance in a sub-$50k electric sports car?

Haha not less than 50 I'd say.

Tesla needs this. As a small manufacturer they need low volume high margin cars to keep the brand image and profits up. GM and Toyota are going to beat them on volume as the tech matures.

True. The Tesla S won't even be safe for long, soon the Porsche Mission E and Fisker EMotion will be available.

NextEV must be crapping their pants on the other hand, because this car's specs are much better than the NIO EP9's - which means it will beat their Nurburgring production record. And it's about 1/6th the price.

Insane specs.  From what I'm hearing, even current Teslas are so fast they make their passengers sick on hard acceleration, this has to be approaching the limit of what a normal human can take.

Am I the only one seeing a hint of RX-8 in the front quarter view?

Those specs are crazy. I just wish all of us little people didn't have to subsidize the rich folks who can afford to buy these things. I wish Elon Musk would go on a one-way trip to Mars.

It has a removable roof section, like an Elise/Exige.

It's some RX-8 up front, too. Not that that's a bad thing, of course.

Yes, totally amazing specs.

As far as I can tell, the specs are like most super cars, totally pointless marketing.  Not many people will be able to use much of that potential- and that's counting the very few that actually buy the cars- not the public.

Yeah, where will all of this be in five or 10 years? Tesla is doing some amazing, innovative things, but can they match the resources of someone like Toyota or GM?

Elon Musk didn't put an EV subsidy in place without a price cap...also consider that fossil fuel companies get generous subsidies, so you're also helping to pay for the fuel in private jets and megayachts.

There's already a Wikipedia page for the new car. Not sure if this was live before this morning, but it will be interesting to see if/how it gets updated through the day today.

In light of all rash of exploding moon and sun roofs, a removable all glass hardtop doesn't strike me as a super good idea. Especially if it's designed to be light enough for one person to remove.

Anyway did anyone see that Fisker filed a patent yesterday for 600 mile range solid state batteries that you can charge in a minute? I assume it's an application of a similar technology here. It doesn't hurt this looks good.

I agree with you they do need halo cars in order to be successful but I can't help but think this is like "oh we are behind and unable to produce model 3's in the numbers we need to, lets show the public a shiny thing thats 6 years out and hope they forget"

It will be interesting to see what sort of nannies they put in place. It occurs to me that at a certain point cars can begin to be like fighter jets - few, if any people would be qualified to drive the things, so HAL needs to get involved.

Wow, as soon as I typed that I thought that response is like looking at the hottest woman you've ever seen and saying "I'll bet she's a real difficult person". I need to get out more sad

Actually, the more I think about it, what the car means in reality is interesting.

To me, given that it's more about total raw performance, and you pay a high price to get that performance... means that an every day car that normal new car buyers can afford and realistically use is farther away than we think.  There's a whole lot more money in mass production, delivering normal cars to normal buyers, than there is on the extreme.  That can be easily shown by the number of really independent super car makers out there, especially the ones that are swimming in tech.

Maybe I'm too much of a pessimist.

Really? Even GRM?

ITS A CONCEPT CAR. A CONCEPT CAR.

IT DOESN'T EXIST. How many concept cars have had insane claims during your lifetime? How many came to fruition? It's driving me nuts how everybody falls for the Tesla hype. If GM announced a 300mph corvette today  with 100mpg and 100k pricetag 'coming in 2020' how many people would call BS?

Remember when the ND miata was supposed to be 1800lb?

This thing is going to be the darling of supercar track days, with near-zero powertrain maintenance and feeding costs, and a relatively low up-front cost. Hopefully that industry won't shut down before the release date, so that I might get to drive one!

It does exist, see a recording from inside one doing 0-60 runs in the Facebook video further up.

And people said the same things about the Model S which is now commonplace and generating competition amongst other manufacturers. It might be late in coming, but it'll definitely happen. Much like Elon launching and landing a rocket.
