That was a completely contemporary car when introduced within months of the Miata. It's a great example of how different two cars can be with very similar spec sheets, and how "up to the minute" doesn't age as well as something that is its own thing. Thank you, little baby Mazda, for having the nerve to build a dedicated platform for your sports car.
I really like the color, I really like the backseat, but man, that 1.6 Mazda motor barely moves the miata, and this has to weigh considerably more.
Looking again on a bigger screen: That thing is pristine! Someone has really loved that car and kept it immaculate. I have never seen one in that kind of shape. It's almost enough to make me not want to bad mouth it.

Looks like it weighs ~200lbs more.
It gets bonus points by virtue of just not being another miata..
I'm always more interested when I see something different. Do something about the horrible hp numbers and some suspension work and it would be a really neat summer driver I think.
This is an example of how different doesn't mean better, though. You can do something about the horsepower easily enough - or just buy one of the turbo ones in the first place, for 140 tire-melting hp - and put money into the suspension. Then you're left with a car that has cutting-edge late-80's styling, weighs more and doesn't handle as well as a Miata. You have a forgotten orphan instead of an icon.
But it is different. And this particular one is in excellent shape.
I knew what this was when I clicked on it.
I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is really worth. It is probably the cleanest one in the country, but man... what an undesirable car. I feel like it is overpriced, but then I can't find a convertible in better condition for less money, so maybe it is right? That doesn't mean I can't find a BETTER convertible for less money, just condition.
How much market can this thing have? Who thinks "I want a Capri"?
In reply to Keith Tanner:
That's why I said summer driver. It's never gonna be a barn burner but it could at least be fun to putt around in on nice days. Me, I'd imagine that one would be a better starting point for mods than one that was beat to hell and back but I don't actually know anything about them so I could be talking more money than anyone would find reasonable.
I wish they had called it something other than Capri. Or, honestly, never bothered. I read an interview once with Bob Lutz saying that the car had been really different and been much more of an MX-5 competitor. Then someone said it needed a back seat. Then the platform got changed to the Mazda BF from something rear-drive (maybe mid-engined?).
That said, it seems like a neat little city car or commuter; a bit more space for groceries and luggage than an MX-5, easy to park, decent on gas. One of you should buy it!
I drove them back to back when new....it was no contest. The Miata is a thousand times better. The Capri is more like a floppy Escort from the day. Very uninspiring to drive.
Well damn.
I was legit expecting it to sit on CL for months upon months slowly going down until it hit a more reasonable price.
