Ok the Yugo is going to be road legalish basically so I can drive it to local autocrosses and back but I was thinking about removing the speedometer and putting a oil pressure and temp gauge in that spot in the dash. Is there any law about removing the odometer?
The only thing I can contribute is this: You need to swap out KM/hour speedos in Canadian cars when they are imported into the states to meet federal regulations.

Is it exempt miles on the title?
If so, it probably is, but you could argue it.....for speed, just don't pass anyone.

For speed I was just going to carry my GPS with me.
Insofar as I'm aware, there's nothing that says you have to have it, only that it's illegal to fraudulently represent the mileage of the vehicle when you sell it. On CA pink slips, there's a checkbox under the current odo reading field that lets you mark that the odometer is not accurate and gives you a couple of reasons you can mark why (rolled-over, broken, etc).
If you never sell it, I don't see where it'd ever be an issue. Of course, IANAL, consult your local laws, YMMV, etc, etc.
GPS is easy and more accurate, and I mean the Tom Tom variety not the GRM Giant Purple Dongslinger variety
Isn't "Don't pass anyone" unnecessary advice for a Yugo owner?
Each state has its own laws as to what is "required equipment" for a roadworthy vehicle. You should be able to find that list on your state's DMV website. If there's no speedometer on the list, I'd print it out and put it in your car. Any ossifer who stops you is probably going to think its required.
I swapped an autometer gauge into my GTI but for some reason you have to double adapt it to an 020 transmission so I never did hook it up. I used my gps or just used the engines song to gauge my speed.
A nice gentleman in uniform (with whom I was having a discussion through my car window at the time) informed me that having, or not having, a speedometer in my vehicle was entirely up to me – because any speed it indicated had no bearing whatsoever on the speed HE said I was travelling at.
That was in Ontario, Canada. Check your local listings.
For a speedo, I have been cheap. I D/L'd the Uylsses Speedo app on my Droid, the one that was in the GRM mag awhile back. Just keep it plugged in, it is a battery hog when running, and place it up on the dash.

The last Canadian-market car I had didn't have that done. It did, however, have a smaller set of digits in MPH. That may have met the requirement.
Do you have state inspections? In VT that wouldn't pass...
There's a difference between what you need to have in order to get the car in the country legally, and what you need after that.
FWIW, i always check "Odometer is incorrect" on the title. I have no idea about its accuracy, and I'm not going to say that it's accurate if I don't know.

In Alabama, surely you aren't serious.
Plus plenty of other things on this car probably would equal it not passing...

You would have to sell the car "TMU" true mileage unknown, which usually cuts the value of the car in half. Since we're talking about a Yugo and half of nothing is still nothing ........

Especially since it is a Yugo with a gutted interior and spring rates likely to break your back. I don't think that will effect resell.
If anything it would be a state by state statute. I'd wager the vast majority of states don't have such a requirement on the books.

I drove my 2002 in AL for 2 years with a functioning speedometer, but a broken odometer. In two years I put something like 17 miles on it. Just checked the box on the title that the actual mileage is not known when I sold it.

we may HAVE to have them here in NC ... but at inspection they don't/have never checked to see if it works ... merely record the miles data .... no matter if it hasn't changed in the past 5 yrs

Thats interesting. Maybe its only newer vehicles or something, but I know its been a bugaboo for some people. I thought it may have to do with misrepresenting true mileage, although it would only affect the seller badly.
Won't pass an inspection in PA, and I think something weird will appear on the car's title if you don't know mileage...
Jeez, this reminds me of my first car, a 1992 Nissan 240SX with the head-up display. Like many of that car's other parts, it had decayed and broken a long time ago and I basically judged my speed by Mk1 Eyeball. I have no idea how that passed inspection because IIRC Mass. requires the speedo and odo to work, and unlike with emissions inspections pre-OBDII cars are NOT exempt from safety inspections.
I'm still surprised I never got pulled over for speeding or even driving too slow (I did get a warning once for a bad sticker...).
Its America. run what ya brung.
I'm putting my gauge set on the dash.
