I was browsing the MINI-USA site and looked up the weight on a MINI Countryman JCW All-4 and it's listed as 4696 lb. Not very MINI. So, then I looked up my 2019 GMC Canyon crew cab 4wd.    4495 lb !!   WTH.....

Edit: I wonder if MINI mistakenly put the GVW in for curb weight.

If that number is accurate. Their Mini is almost 300lbs heavier than this.

Current weight of production cars is disgusting, all for crash safety.

That sounds like R53 numbers, I think.

I found another list that shows the 4696 as the laden weight and the curb weight as 3613, so it appears MINI uses "Curb weight" in place of GVW on their website. That makes more sense. I struggled to believe the unladen weight could be more than my truck.

I somewhat agree, but not entirely. I have a 1991 VW GTI 2L. It's listed as 2325#, so there has been some weight gain to cars that are that same size, but the cars are also larger for bigger people these days. My wife's xB weighs 2425 , but will hold 4 large adults comfortably.Cars in 70s & 80s were considerably smaller. Just go look at a 1st gen Civic or Scirocco. I was comparing dimensions of my 1973 Corolla and my NB Miata. The Corolla is shorter by an inch and narrower by 6 inches. That's pretty small, yet it weighed right about the ton mark back in the day and it was a 4 passenger car, 4 small passengers.

So some of the weight gain is due to safety regulations, but some of it is to create more space for bulkier people.

My 2011 Elantra is supposed to be between 2700 and 2900 lbs, even with all the airbags.

I double checked while getting some work done at the Mini dealer today, and no, the Countryman's cargo area isn't a meaningful enough increase over our four-door hardtop to make it a reasonable replacement.

For being that much bigger, it's not usefully much bigger.

So a WRX with a morbidly obese passenger. Well done, Germany.

I was  looking at the MINI website yesterday morning, and was shocked to see I could build any S or JCW with a manual transmission.

I saw the manuals were delayed, but that was an article from last spring. Are they still going to offer manuals, or is it all auto or dual clutch?

First, that isn't quite true.  Yes, some weight has been added with ABS, airbags, stability control systems.  However, a ton of weight has been added by creature comforts and sheer size.  Heated seats, power everything, 20" wheels, infotainment system (and all the wiring to go with it), etc....

Besides, while I don't want a 6000lb pig, I'll gladly add a few hundred lbs to the curb weight of my street car to save my life.  The days of me wanting to DD a 2400lb tin can with no protection are long gone.

It may sound like that but the heading was exactly the model mentioned by the OP
