I think that's mainly because they have more model designations and fewer engine options.  IIRC the only car they sell these days that has two engines available is the A6.  The A-vs-S covers the differences between the small and bigger engines in all of the others.

1.8T, 2.0T, 2.9T, 4.0T.  The T stands for Turbo except on the 3.0T where it stands for s(T)upercharger. :)

Plus names can actually mean different things in different languages, so you have to try to make up words that have no other meanings, which is itself troublesome. Alphanumeric names have few such difficulties.

Chevy Nova being a prime example. Not surprisingly, didn't sell all that well in Mexico...

you must be very young then, BMW has been relatively honest with their numbers until recently. Yes, the 318i was really a 319i towards the end, but for the most part, a 325 had a 2.5 litre engine in it.

528e had a 2.7 in it in 1982 and the same engine was badged as a 525e in Europe. Same with the e30 variant. 745i had a 3.2 albeit with a turbo, later a 3.4. The 3.0csi had a 3.2 back in the seventies.

Thanks for calling me young though, I'll take that any day.
