I know we have a couple OBD2 scan tool threads, but I didn;t see much in there specifically on apps. And more specifically on iOS apps. Anyone have anything they like?
I was looking at the stuff from ThinkCar and it looks like they have what I'm looking for, but honestly it also seems kind of convoluted figuring out exactly what it costs. The dongle is $80, but then to unlock the app it's additional money, and that only gives you one make of car, and only for a year (?),and more can be purchased (?). I mean, if I can decipher everything, it looks like what I'm looking for, but it seems to be hidden behind bad/hostile design.
Or do I just need to go buy a dedicated scan tool because I'll end up pspending the $4-500 getting the app to work the way I want it to anyway?
At the end of the day its all barely-supported Chinese crap if it doesn't say "Snap-On" on it, so YMMV. I would stick to wired and go with a chinese clone of a factory tool before I tried to get one of those bluetooth units to work reliably.
Mine tells me the code but won't erase the code after I fix the issue (HF special).
It does erase the light - so get what?
I've had a BlueDriver since 2017-ish, Android phone. Mostly I just use it to turn off the Golf's CEL right before emissions test (stupid glowplugs). The app is free, so you probably can look at it without spending $100 for the dongle. The dongle is the only thing you have to purchase, and no recurring fees or limit on # of vehicles. Occasionally my phone takes a while to connect, but I don't recall any problems with it staying connected. If you read all the modules it takes seriously bloody forever. Reading and clearing only the CEL/MIL codes is fast. IIRC the "repair advice" the app offered was not the most useful, but it is an included feature. I have never used (or needed) their product support.
