I am knee deep in parts and tools for too many projects. To help with space I have been storing one project car offsite in a secured and conditioned space of a warehouse. Unfortunately the space is open to all the surrounding spaces so I can only store the parts that fit in the car. On top of that the rent just went from $140 to $200 a month.

Ideally I'd love to find a 20 x 20 place with walls that I could store multiple vehicles in and parts for those projects. What I have found has been very pricey or very sketchy. What do other GRM ers do for space? Anyone know of a good secure place around Atlanta that is project car friendly?

IDK, but if you find a good one around Atlanta, especially in the northwest suburbs, please share. We just found out that somewhere between the realtor/sales agent and the builder, someone berkleyed up as the basement was poured and framed. We had specifically requested pricing on installing a garage door in our basement, as our house will have a walk out basement with 12' ceilings. Somehow that never happened and now the builder says "Sorry, we're too far along to change it now". I am pissed...to say the least. But the wife wants to proceed with building of the house. So my project space now has vanished, unless I decide to use up one of the 2 regular garage bays, which I don't want to do.

Klay - it's never too far for them to fix one of their screw ups. It just costs them more to make it right. Anything is possible for enogh $, and it should be their $ if they dropped the ball.

Sorry Itsa, no help on Atlanta locations. If you were in Macon I might have some connections...

Subscribed. I've had the same thoughts. I love our little house in Decatur, but there's not anywhere to put more than 3 cars (one outside the garage).

Trust me, that's what I communicated to them...in not so pleasant tones. However, the builder denies knowing about the request and the realtor is tripping over themselves. The response I have back is either move forward as is or they'll refund our money and we can walk away. They won't change it. I let a bunch of ugly words fly and wanted to walk away, but the wife wants to live there, so we're going to live there.

Make sure they give you copies of the structural drawings from the permit set and any re steel shop drawings. Cutting a doer later will be a pita but it is very doable. If you have those drawings it will make the process much easier.

This. They may not want to change it, but if you have a contract stating that there will be a garage door opening in the walk-out basement, then they need to put one in at no additional expense to you.

In reply to Matt B:

I'm in the SE side of town too. I love my .18 acres but yeah. Car storage would be nice.

What have you heard about the redan road area? 10 years ago it seemed to be a lot of miscreants. But I do occasionally see ads for 400 to 600 sf "workshops" I don't have the need for that much space but if it could be subdivided.....

I actually just moved from the Redan Rd. area just 1.5 yrs ago (Rockbridge on the south side of Stone Mountain - lived there for 4 years). I have to say it's still not a "nice" part of town, but it isn't Detroit either. It is sort of in that limbo of being slightly worrisome without being downright scary. I'd describe it as lower-middle class with signs of poverty. I'd be more worried about tools getting stolen than a project car.

That said, despite only having an open carport nobody ever berked with us or our direct neighbors. Even with a please-steal-me integra gsr. We did have some neighbors skirting the poverty line, but they were really good people doing their best and renovating the distressed house on the street. One or two streets over I heard it wasn't as rosy though.

I guess I'd check actual crime rates in the area for residential and commercial properties.

Since you're so close we should meet up for a beer sometime. I'm always down to visit Twain's or the Brickstore in downtown Decatur.

I'm up in the Dallas/Acworth area. There are some outdoor storage facilities around that are in the countryside, so I'm not going to be worried about security. It's more the convenience factor that I have to figure out. If I only have an hour of free time, it'll be a waste if the storage yard is 15 minutes away.

As for the house issue, unfortunately the contract didn't specify the basement garage. It was something we had discussed at our meeting with the builder. We were told they'd get pricing and figure out the code requirements. Next thing we know the basement is poured and framing started. We went yesterday again, and found they framed a door in the side of the real garage, which we never asked for. Gotta love cookie cutter developments... Basically, it's "Here's your cookie, don't ask us to add chocolate chips on top, we don't know how".

Matt Yeah that was my experience there too. A project we were building kept losing its copper and building materials. Neighbors seemed nice though. And I'm sure it was not the residents doing it. I am definitely up for twains or brick store. Both great places. I'm racing time to get a chimney demolished and the hole patched the next 2 weeks but after that let's do that.

Klayfish Yeah. One issue that probably made them decide not to peruse your door is the air separation requirements in the code for vehicle garages. When and if you add a door later make sure the drawings designate it as a patio door.

Have a friend who was having a house built and the workmanship in some areas was crude at best and the local inspector didn't seem to be concerned about it. Friend told contractor he would sue if the job wasn't done right. Contractor said go ahead and sue he didn't have any money and would just go out of business and start another contracting. Friend went and got an lawyer and filed suit. Amazing! Contractor suddenly said everything would be taken care of at no expense to friend! I'm not a sue happy guy at all nor is my friend but there are a loy of XXXholes out there that sometimes that is the only thing they understand. Now if it was never written to a contract that is probably a whole other story!
