I will still use a fram XG if the store is out of the Bosche.

Check some of the specialist MINI vendors. Occassionally they'll run quantity discount specials on filters. My ex- is still going through a case of filters she bought years ago.

Last I heard the mobil 1 and royal purple filters were rebadged purolator pure ones.

I use rhe purolator pure ones because they are like 5 bucks at pep boys and supposed to be pretty good.

Royal Purple, Mobil, STP, Deutsch, Mopar, TRD, and a lot more are made by Champion Laboratories. Pretty sure Purolator was made by Champion at one point in time, but they're no longer listed on their website.

I typically use MANN filters on our Euro stuff. I started using Mobil 1 oil filters on the Volvo a few years back. I stumbled across an Amazon vendor having a 1/2 off sale and bought enough oil filters for 50K miles worth of oil changes for the VW & the Volvo. I'm nearing the end of my supply, if I can't find as good of a deal on Mobil, I may consider other options.

The Jeep, has had Fram filters, and Pennzoil motor oil in it, most of its life, never a problem. Other cars usually got whatever was on sale/cheapest, and while they eventually met their demise, it was never oil related.

I have been using the Purolator PureOne filters on our daily drivers most of the time since new. I started using the PureOne filters on my WRX's after Subaru changed OEM manufacturers a few years back, and they are a great filter. Since we bought Mazdas, I just kinda stuck with the habit, but their OEM filters are nice and cheap too.

Last oil change, I used a Mobil 1 on my car because it was on sale with my oil. My car runs 0w20 full synthetic and Mobil 1 is the most common brand around here for that.

At one point, I know that Champion Labs was making a number of different filter brands; STP, Bosch, Mobil 1, and K&N were all made by them at one point or another.

If Fram filters are so crummy, why does every classic V-12 Ferrari engine have two of them sticking up at the front of the engine. Does no one else make one that fits?

BTW I use Wix

Fram was the OE filter for those cars. vintage Ferrari owners are more concerned with originality than anything else.

We order Baldwin filters from Europe for the F cars we service.

From what I hear owners that really drive their cars run Baldwin for their metal insides and swap the cardboard Frams on before shows.

Note that that comparison was last updated fourteen years ago. Not only has there has been change in the product lines since then, but there has even been change within filter industry at large.

Personally, I use OEM filters for the imports, and an ACDelco on the truck.... which I guess is also OEM. Considering I paid MORE for my last NAPA Gold/WIX than I did the OEM, I don't see the point. I buy 'em in bulk (usually 4-6 at a time for the Hy/Kia)and pay about $4.90 a piece with tax.

I've personally seen frams explode, split seams, blow out seals, stuff the pickup with cardboard etc. That's enough for me to never buy another.

Somewhat non-related question I've always wondered: How the heck is the filter changed on those engines without dumping oil all over the place?

Just like any other car with them mounted upside down. They tend to drain back into the system once the seal is broken. On my Rambler with one of these L6

You unscrewed the filter about a turn and a half, waited a minute and then took it all the way off with a rag under it.

Sort of off topic, but Walmart here switched over from Fram to Purolator. I was thrilled because they were half the price of the Fram filters (which I wasn't buying), but as of about a month ago, they switched back to Fram, at the original insanely high price.

I can pay full retail at any of the auto parts stores (crazy expensive here in Canada) and it's still 25% cheaper than the Fram filters at Walmart. I don't get it.

The better question to ask yourself, is does it really matter if the fram sucks balls?

Change your oil and your filter regularly. Your car will last forever. It's a pretty simple formula, and it doesn't really matter what you use.

Edit- To clarify for any internet haters that jump on me, for daily driving/normal use. My statement does not apply to racing (even though it is still pretty much correct there as well).
