Guys thanks for all the advice! Studs are not an option in Michigan, unfortunately. 20 years ago I wanted a far more snow aggressive tire, but nowadays our winters are a joke, snow wise. We just do get the accumulation we used to.

Decent all seasons aren't bad in the snow when they're nearly new, but seem to drop off pretty rapidly after the first season and they're not as good as real winter tires in any case. I was all-in on the all season bandwagon until my son clued me into winter tires about ten years ago. The difference surprised me. The family has been on Altimax Arctics ever since, mostly because my local tire guys stock the Arctics and they're fairly cheap.
MI winters definitely aren't what they used to be, but winter tires are still worth every penny. I'm running Perelli winter Sotozero 3's on my Golf and I've been happy with them. I'm in VA so they get tons of dry road miles, but I run summer tires the rest of the time and head up to MI for christmas every year, so the snows are worth it to me.
If you're anticipating cold dry roads most of the time w/ occasional snow/ice, a performance winter is the ticket, that's exactly what they are made for. From there, I would pick a quality brand and buy on cost & size.
