Every so often I browse craigslist for a deal on an old tire machine, today I found a Coats 10-10 for $375. I watched a few youtube videos and the only tires I see people using that machine on are pretty tall sidewalls with rusty steel wheels. Anyone familiar with these machines and know whether they'd damage the finish on your wheel lip? Also whether they'd work ok with tires that have smaller aspect ratios? I'm at the tire shop 6-8 times a year, so for $375 this thing would actually pay for itself quickly if it actually works. Link for reference:

Can accommodate 10 inch to 17 inch wheels.

Do you have any cars with 18 inch wheels?

Watched a youtube video of it. Considering we occasionally scuff a wheel lip from a lever slipping a bit during mounting with a modern machine, I can't imagine what dragging the lever all the way around the lip would do do an aluminum wheel. Also looks like it wouldn't really be conducive to mounting low profile tires.

That was my fear, looks like I'm going to pass on it.

Soapy water on the bead goes a long way to achieving easy tire mounting.

A lot of large wheel diameter tires  that are soaped up can be forced onto the wheel without having to use the mounting tool.

Usually only the bottom bead though.

Get a rim clamp machine. Those old machines won't do aluminum wheels or big wheels.

I got my used rim clamp for $25 more. I would pass on this one.

16 year old me learned to change tires on a machine like that... roughly half-a-century ago.

The guy who taught me only had one arm, claiming the other arm had been severed by the very same tire machine.  I did not have any cause to doubt his word.
