I think that it's a hell of an idea. Class by power-to-weight ratio. All you need is a racing license, a properly safe, pre-1979 car and you're good to go!

This ought to bring some awesome cars back to the track. Winning is probably going to be expensive though.
Interesting idea- what are the classes available?
One more reason I should get off my rear and get my '74 up and running correctly.
Other NASA classes rely on dyno testing. Makes sense, none of these cars are making original power.
That should be fun. I'd think light weight and small power would still be the winner, especially in a low-drag body.
Oh man, I think my dad's '60 Catalina (former circle tracker, caged/tubular front subframe) just found a class to race in!
Where does NASA-SE run?
The 2012 events were listed on the bottom of the link from the OP:

Race 02. 03/09/2012 - Road Atlanta (RA)
Race 03. 04/14/2012 - Roebling Road (RR)
Race 04. 05/19/2012 - Carolina (CMP)
Race 05. 06/15/2012 - Road Atlanta (RA)
Race 06. 07/07/2012 - Charlotte (CMS)
Race 07. 08/04/2012 - Road Atlanta (RA)
Race 08. 10/20/2012 - Atlanta (AMP)
Race 09. 11/10/2012 - Carolina (CMP)
Race 10. 11/30/2012 - Road Atlanta (RA)
I'm digging this more and more as I think about it, both from a competitor and a spectator standpoint. Of course, there's nothing stopping me in the "rules" from building a vintage car with modern suspension and engine in it, but I do like the way the power/weight rules will level the playing field no matter what's underhood.
Letter written to NASA Midwest! If any of you other folks want to chime in with an email (even if you're not from around here, I won't tell), I'd appreciate it.
This gives me pretty awesome thoughts about what do do with the 79 RX-7 Lemon's car. Already has a 5.0/T-5 in it. Looks like it would be pretty easy transition into this.
If I wanted to get more serious reliable fuel injected fun I could drop in a 4.8 or 5.3 backed by a T-10 on a FC subframe and some wide tires. Could be fun.
At first glance, the specifications may be too loose for really close racing. But the class does two things really well - it presents a venue for old, popular cars to get back on the track, and it continues the shift towards fun over hard-bit, big bucks competition. If you are someone who wants to have fun without worrying that the scutineer will pick up your illegal muffler; or know that no matter how hard you try, you'll never have the money or talent to win a spec class; or like the spirit of Lemons, but need something more serious and fast..... then this may be for you.
Am I the only one who was scared that some government entity was trying to make vintage racing illegal?

Where did that come from? My first response is to figure you for a tin-foil-hat-wearer, but then there's the smiley face?
I really like the idea of this type of racing. I just do the NASA HPDE thing in my 70 Firebird occasionally but I'd consider building a (less pretty) car for this knowing I'd never try to be competitive and can build it however I feel like and can afford. Just go out and blast around trying to improve against cars that are about the same speed.

Haha, yeah I thought the same thing for a split second. "Who wants to outlaw vintage racing?!"

Those crazies who think that any modification from stock is an abomination, and those who see these beautiful classics being destroyed, instead of sitting in a museum where they belong in all their stock, unmodified splendor!
