its been about 100 mile on the new to me Crown Vic, and about every other time I drive it the car wants to shut down/stop runing while I am driving. At first I thought it was the battery concetions. So change the postive side like the last owner said he would of done. Well thats not the case. Today while driving my Check Engine light is starting to flash while I am driving. What should I do? What would you guys do?

I'd scan the codes and see what's up. 4.6's don't run real well with a clogged fuel system so change out the fuel filter right now (mine acted like you said when the filter clogged up).

P71, did your sound like disel too? where is the fuel fliter?

Fuel filter is underneath the rear door, right in front of the passenger tire (IIRC, it's been a year). It has 2 little plastic clips that you break to get the fuel lines off (new filters come with new clips). Pop one side and let the thing drain out before popping the other unless you like tasting gas. It's held in with a hose clamp. Easy job, all you need is a single flat-blade screwdriver and about 5 minutes.

Cool, I'll try that when the wife get home with her car.

This is clearly a mistake. P71s NEVER have problems!

Code readers are so cheap now there's almost no reason to not have one. Under $100 will get you in the door.

Osterizer, P71's have problems just like every other car, nobody has ever claimed otherwise. The difference is it's usually super-easy to work on and super-cheap to fix!

You have either a bad coil(s) or a badly clogged fuel filter.

I have mentioned this before, they are really the only things that fail regularly on these. Buy the Motorcraft or NAPA Premium units to replace the coil. If the filter is that clogged you will need a fuel pump soon.

for the most part they're the same.

you need a coil. stop by advance or oreillys or autozone or ANYBODY and they'll read the misfire code for free to tell you which one.

same thing happened to me as soon as i bought mine, but i found the weakest link (#1 coil) as soon as i degreased/washed the engine.

The coils are coil-on-plug so if the whole engine is running bad it's usually the fuel filter. Otherwise scan the thing to figure out which coil is going out. None of mine have yet (knock on wood).

Yes, #1 coil is the most popular but I have seen Jackson DPS need 4 at one time as well.

IF you have a dode reader try this trick:

1: Find the cylinder per code. 2: Remove coil from that cylinder and exchange with another cylinder. 3: Spray with hose, run, recheck codes.

If the misfire has moved you have a bad coil. If the misfire has not moved you have a bad injector/compression/etc.

The earlier cars have an EDIS coil that, while it is pretty durable, is not fail proof. The EDIS coils will have 4 cylinders per coil, the 97 and later coils are coil on plug.

I have 7 COP units I got for my 2000 expedition off eBay. I really only need to keep one or two as backup. I assume that they are the same units

I believe so. They (NAPA) updated two numbers to one of the existing numbers a while back and I am certain that one was car and one was truck

no the coed reader/serivce guy said that the top end of the motor was not getting eny oil, the noise they think is a conceting rod(it dose get louderas you drive it). and the motor HAS NO OIL PERSHER!!! cant belive I forgot that part. The person I feel the worst for is my wife, she has to put up my grumpy-ness

Bad deal sorry to hear it. Let us know what the ultimate problem is/was. How many miles were on it?

Was there oil in the pan? Ya I know stupid question but it is coming from someone that forgot to put a filter on a motor.. . . I was pissed off for a week for being so dumb.
