I'm thinking about buying this up for the engine, but I want to make sure its the one I want. I do want the EJ22, I don't want the EJ25.
Thoughts?
I'd be swapping into my '72 Beetle. Now that I've got the Beetle engine apart and seen all the damage, I'm thinking it'll be as much or more than this to rebuild it. If I bought this, I'd be parting/scrapping the rest of the car as soon as I had the engine/wiring/ECU pulled.
Yup, the ej22 is one of the better subie engines. Usual checks apply to any used motor, especially one with a timing belt, but they tend to be long lived if they are maintained.

I'm no guru, but just went by what my guru told me and that's the one you want. EJ22, non interference, and its literally the motor that Kennedy wrote the book on. When you buy the adapter from them all of their instructions and wiring diagrams are based on the EJ22.
You'll love it in a beetle, with the VWs gearing they fly :)
So is the engine pictured a 22 or a 25? 1996 was borderline territory, seems like some Legacys had one, some had the other.
1996 is the last year of the non-interference EJ22. There is a stamp on top of the block right next to the alternator if you want to be sure, but in 1996 any non-2.5GT should have the 2.2 unless someone swapped it.
John if you buy that what are your plans for the body??
You simply cannot kill a Subaru 2.2.
I had one and tried for four years - it drove itself to the junkyard when the body fell apart.

Sell it to you?

Good question! I might be interested but I guess it depends on what is left after you get what you want out of it.

I'd be pulling the engine, most of the wiring harness, ECU, radiator (maybe).
You'd have a rolling shell with transmission and differential.
If you could hit me with an offer, I might be able to swing this with the wife. I can't justify buying it without having either 1) one or more of my other POS's sold or pending sale or 2) a solid plan for the carcass of this one.

How different are the EJ22 and EJ22T from the Legacy Turbo?
Oil Squirters and closed deck?

There were actually open deck EJ22Ts made for a few years. I don't remember the specifics (have been out of Subies for a while) but I think there are some differences in the heads, or at least the exhaust ports are different.

Well, I am in a similar boat with my own wife. I have to sell some stuff off first. Also, give all that is wrong with the car, I think his firm price of 1500 is a bit much.
I'd rather find one for $1k, but they seem to be made of unicorn tears around here. If I could recoop $700 or so from the leftovers (sell whole/part out/scrap), I could convince SWMBO.
I'd sell you mine a lot cheaper, but I suspect Ohio is further than you want to go...
Yeah... I saw that. Right price, wrong place.
