I visited the LeMons race at Buttonwillow today, just in time to attend the drivers meeting. Shortly after the race started, as well as the carnage, and the penalties.

Even though I was only a spectator, I had a fantastic time. Man, what an awesome event.

Anyway, I uploaded 93 pictures to Photobucket:

Here's a sample, Black Iron Racing's BMW 540 beast:

This car was an even match, moving through traffic, for the Metro Gnome, another bad-ass contraption.

That is a BMW 540i?? Wow. I wonder if those guys have a build site anywhere.

Was a 540. There was a little less of it after the People's Curse.

I was there. Our cars died early and wouldn't resurect for more than few laps no matter what we tried.

I can sum up the build of that 540 if you like. Take off parts. End summary.

The Geo MG, was a blast to drive, BTW. I stuck on the 540's bumper for the first 30 laps or so, my good buddy in that car. Very awesome race.

Thanks! What prompted the people's curse? And how was that car purchased for only $500? If it was running, the motor and transmission alone are worth more than $500, even if every panel/window on the car was damaged. I'd love a running/driving 540 for $500! It would be a great motor to drop into an e30 for instance.

The car had been slammed in the passenger's rear wheel, ripped the subframe from the unibody. It had also been sitting at a shop for a few weeks. Owner wanted it "gone yesterday".

In reply to Dan G:

I watched that from the west side of the track - very cool.

Oops, I mean I watched you tail the 540 for 30 laps. Impressive!

Yeah there were a couple of "oh crap" moments were I broke too late and though I was going off track, but grip always won out. It turns out after a while it wasn't that I was braking too late, but that there simply weren't ANY front pads left. I burned through a brand new set in less than 90 minutes. A double pump on the pedal would build up enough pressure to nearly lock the rear drums, which got things pretty squirrelly! But once again, that car was a real blast to drive, sequential transmissions are meant to be used in race cars.
