Spoiler alert: The live timing page shows the standings, and the fast cars go first, so the winner is most likely decided by now. I'm excited by the potential winner, even though it's not near the electric VW's record, for reasons I shall explain later.

The factory sometimes gets involved in this, but most of the competitors are the epitome of grassroots: enthusiasts who build a car on a budget and go risk it all for glory.

Overload
The open-wheel cars are a diverse bunch at Pikes Peak, and my favorite is Clint Vasholtz's home-built beast. Unlike the rest, it's a front-engine car built from the starting point of Clint's previous car which was a tube-frame stock car. You can see this in the fact that the driver sits offset to the left, in addition to the front-engine layout of course. In this 2015 video they state it's about 700 pounds overweight. Yet it's won overall in the past, and it seems he's back in this car for 2020 after a couple of years driving a McLaren for a different team.
Look at this thing, it's just the polar opposite of what an open-wheel car usually means for hillclimb or road racing, and it's fast. I love it.

I loved that Cole got within 2 seconds with his 3/4 sized open wheeler. They were looking to just get under 10 minutes and he got a 9:37.4 They had to bleep him as he was so surprised.
