I remember being 9 or 10 and asking my dad why on earth Rockford didn't just get the Trans-Am. He could easily catch or outrun his adversaries that way. Dad just shot me one of those "...one day you'll understand.." looks.
Mike Rowe has a crush on this car too. From the link provided on his Facebook page this is a Formula 400 dressed to look like an esprit for the show. James Garner purchased the car from the company and used it as his personal car until 1981. Still has some audio equipment installed from the filming.

Just don't expect any real "performance" from that car though it's a Formula in disguise. Even the Formy/Trans Am engine options in late 70's birds didn't break 200 hp.
Once you own that you might be required to wear a sport coat and slacks every time you drive it.

It’s got plenty of torque still so it will get around just fine and still be fun to drive.

Mom had a 77 TA with a real Poncho 400 and a 4spd. For a smogger that car would move.

My understanding is Garner insisted on an Esprit (or at least a car disguised as one.) His rationale was a private investigator who was always hurting for money wouldn't have been able to afford the fancier models.
I know a guy that can do a real nice moonshiner's turn, if you need some done.
