The Bride has found a 2005 2.4 that she's lusting after.

Don't do the turbo version. Chronic troubles with the turbos blowing seals and self-destructing. The most common reason is that the return line for the oil gets clogged up which spikes oil pressure in the bearing and blows out the seals.

Non turbos had crank position sensor issues and sometimes short-lived starters, but otherwise pretty stout. ABS and TCS lights are pretty common on 01-04. Not sure about 05.

I'd recommend the opposite.

Turbo troubles are atypical unless basic maintenance (like oil changes) are neglected. There are two levels of turbo, however: The 2.5T ('Low-Pressure' turbo) and the T5 ('High Pressure' turbo). The 2.5T is the better DD, as it has a plateau of ~240 ft-lbs from 1500-5000RPM. The T5 has almost 50HP over the 2.5T, but is more of the classic turbo setup with less off boost response, then a big whack in the pants as it comes on.

The 2.4 (NA) is not a bad motor - you can get some really surprising MPG out of one with a 5spd and careful driving - but it feels a little small in the big wagon.

I've been working (professionally) on the white block Volvos since shortly after they came out, and I've changed one turbo. As with all cars, if you spend a bit of money to maintain them, they are very nice cars that will give a lot of years of service. Start cheaping out, and they will build up a backlog of service that will make them seem very very expensive.

Had 99 V70 GLT - Bought it used. What curtis73 said... the vent system for crankcase pressure was a PIA in this car. Plenty of ABS and TCS lights and when the air went we dumped it (88k miles).

Have 07 V70 2.4 - We avoided the turbo this time and have no regrets. One sensor failure so far but the car is CPO. We just had the 30k mile service.

We had a GLT and now the 2.4. I've driven my friends 98 T-5. Maybe I'm lame, but for the cars real purpose I never noticed a difference.
