Anyone that doesn't want to learn to drive has to pay for their own taxi. I will not give you a ride because you are too lazy to learn an essential skill. That is magnitudes worse than being too lazy to learn to drive a standard transmission. Also an essential skill in my book as well as being able to change a flat tire. Essential.
Screw robot cars, I want robotic, non-driving teenagers. Assemble my sandwich, Tyler (or Taylor or Trevor or Skylar.)
iRobot. I'm gonna be Will Smith still rocking a combustible engine while the rest of the world gets ferried about in their robot cars.
Not just any dino burner, but real deal MV Agusta F4.

Jerry, do you come here right from the opec mic nights, or do you posts on your phone while waiting forever because you got hosed in the order lottery?
You're right. However, Ferdinand Porsche is still horizontally opposed.

I LOVE that scene where the chick asks him 'Does this thing run on gas? You know that stuff burns, right?'
Engineers gonna' engineer. They can't stop themselves.
It just seems like there are so many different kind of Porsche owners/drivers, that we need different kinds of Porsches.
But I can't afford to mess with any of them!

And people wonder why I want an MV. I will own one, and I'll probably do something stupid like a fly and ride to the leftist coast to get one. I'm lusting over a low mileage F4 312R......so I can be a poor Bruce Wayne.

Will it have a crane with a giant flail on the roof?
Automated cars will only work if there are no non-automated (unpredictable) cars on the same roads. If they are going to do this, they need to take the human element out.
It's not hard to imagine a world where you CAN'T drive yourself. They'll be doing this for your own safety---- and the safety of the children. They will compile statistics of how much safer automation is.... how much more efficient. Really, you'd be very irresponsible if you drove yourself.....it will be like smoking in a car full of children with the windows up.
Don't worry though.....they will probably have "old car days" where you can have the automated tow truck take your horribly irresponsible "manual" car to a parking lot, where you can sit in a lawn chair next to your car and commiserate with others about how good the good ole days were.
Get off my lawn! Screw it.....I'm digging a hole in the side of a mountain and living off the grid!

I'm surprised by how much support there is for automated driving on this site. Maybe its because I don't commute through a traffic jam everyday. Just take all the people who support automated transportation, put them on a bus and presto, no more traffic jam.
In reality though I don't think this will ever exist beyond possible freeway use where unforseeable circumstances can be limited.
Of course if they build a system and name it SKYNET it will soon figure out humans are the problem and erradicate us all.
There are a couple major social hurdles that are much greater than the technological hurdles.
One is liability. Who is responsible when your car causes an accident? You? The road? The automaker?
The second is the fact that sometimes when driving, the driver has two choose between two bad choices. Hit the toddler that stepped into the road or drive off the cliff? With autonomous cars, someone has to program that choice in ahead of time. Let that sink in.
