Porsche Suing Singer??

I guess they did but it sounds like they came to some sort of an agreement. Sounds like protection of intellectual property. I wonder if it will change how Singer modified cars are badged?

I visited Singer just as they were hitting their major growth curve. They made it extremely clear that they were a restoration shop, not a manufacturer. The article plays a little fast and loose with that, but it was clearly legally important to Singer. 

I would expect that Singer can keep the stock badging, but they can't manufacture their own variants. They probably also can't use the trademarks in advertising - not that they do much!

I wonder if anybody would care if I started building very high end bespoke sewing machines and called my company Porsche?

Ok, I get it.  Singer can advertise that they restore and modify Porsche vehicles to the customers wishes.  But don't use any Porsche logos in Singer advertising.

I would think even most Porsche fanatics would consider such a lawsuit a little petty on Porsche's part.  I wonder if Porsche would have ever built the Sport Classic if not for Singer?  

BTW, the green one above recently sold on BAT for $478k, less than half what the last Singer sold there brought...

I think it's very important to note that if Porsche fails to defend its trademarks against infringement, even if it's infringement that benefits the company by way of viral marketing, they could still lose their rights to that trademark. 

My guess is that they informed Singer beforehand, and the settlement involves minor changes or a nominal payment for appearances sake. 

Don't read too much into this.

How about when Ford sued a forum for a calendar of member's cars? 

I thought it was this Singer.

I've had the same thought. Does Porsche own the rights to the shape? Below is a picture of the recent RUF all carbon fiber tribute. It looks an awful lot like a 911.

Ruf is a different animal than Singer - it's a manufacturer with licenses and a long history of building its own cars from Porsche bodies.
