Not being a particular fan of 944s or 924s, I just discovered today that the gearbox of a 944 is in the back. So, I got to thinking that might work for my 906 needs.

  1. Will a flat 6 from a 911 bolt to a 944 gearbox?

  2. Will the axles from a 944 bolt to a 911 or 914 gearbox?

  3. Is there any 944/924 drive train interchange?

Someone on the Pelican Parts forum or 924board.org can probably point you in the right direction if you haven't already asked there. I know the 924 had 3 different transmissions during its life span. 4 speed Audi, then 5 speed Porsche snailshell, then 5 speed Audi, in that chronological order.

That's all I got

The Audi boxes used an Audi 5-cylinder bell housing pattern in the rear to mount to the torque tube as they were the same case as the Audi 016 boxes used in the FWD/AWD Audi sedans of the time. Those boxes are used in Lambo and GT40 replicas using adapter plates for their small block V8's, BMW V12's, etc. they have proven to be fairly tough when rebuilt and with a brace added to help 3rd gear and used in lightweight cars for anything other than drag racing (some found adding a delay for the clutch released saved the transaxle when launching).

The Porsche 915 based gearbox used in the 79 924 and 79-80 924 Turbo used a proprietary 4-bolt mount to the torque tube, but some of the internals could be swapped with the regular 915 box.

The axles for both use a super beetle/VW vanagon bolt pattern which I believe might be shared with the Porsche 930.

Hope that helps!
