Due to the fact that I didn't get my new engine done in time and don't really trust my old one, I'm just going on part of the Charleston, WV to Norwalk, Oh leg. Anyone else going to be there?

Is your son participating or going as a spectator? If participating, what's he driving?

my buddy and i are trying to go to norwalk for the evening tuesday. i'm not sure what i will drive, maybe the chevelle maybe the rambler. i went to the kickoff at the IX center however many years ago and got to see the mule up close and personal, one of my buddies is friends with mark steilow.
I think we should all try to hook up somehow. I'm going to have my Mustang in it, so if nothing else you guys should be able to find a beat up, dented, scratched and buffer burned gold mustang in a sea of nice cars...But it might work better if we had a meeting time and place.
I should be at Norwalk by noonish when registration starts and the gates open. We'll be there all day until we decide to leave...probably pretty late.
Going to be on vacation, coincidentally driving from Wash DC to Cleveland on Tuesday. May leave early and drive to Norwalk, especially if there will be a GRM sub-group there.
You guys need to take tons of photos for me. Power tour is on my bucket list along with getting back enough movement in my ankles to ride from SD to Sturgis on a old hardtail.
Happy to take the lead as y'all come to my corner of the world.
I am not sure what the format of the event really is.
The Summit Motorsports Park (SMP) Website says the following:
EVENT DAY SCHEDULE
TUESDAY JUNE 10th
Spectator Gates Open 12:00 p.m.
Car Show 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Fun Runs (Participants Only) 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
The Power Tour Route/Schedule says cars leave Huntington WV at 7:30 am to travel the 287 mile, non-direct route through two lane roads to get to the dragway. I would estimate that the "tour cars" arrive at Norwalk at about 2:00 pm.
My guess is that before the "tour cars" arrive, the people hopping in on the tour and spectators arrive.
There is probably a big vendor area.
Summit Motorsports Park sits out in the middle of nowhere (which is good for the whole, "not in my back yard" aspect of the noise a dragway can make.) It is on the outskirts of Norwalk, OH which has little to offer as well. The closest "city" is Sandusky and that is 20 minutes north, my home town.
Above, Aussie Steve mentioned a restaurant that I have raved about. It is not Thai but rather Vietnamese. Aside from very fresh, authentic cuisine they have an amazing beer selection. If you are not familiar with Vietnamese food, fear not, it is all derivative of most Asian cooking. Good an healthy. Their Yelp reviews.
I am sure you have heard such thing before about beer selection, but...
This location was opened two years ago by a family member who came from the original location in Richmond, Va which was named by CraftBeer.com as the #1 Beer Bar in the Nation for 2012
I am not sure if this makes for a good rally point? I am not sure where people are traveling in from.
This could also be a good ending point if anyone is looking for dinner after the event.
I live one mile from the restaurant and have an open guest room as big, if not bigger than a hotel room (1 king bed), for anyone who would like to stay.

Of this sub-group, maybe we should have a GRM sub-tour.
We might get GRM to send window banners.
Our rally point could be a "U-Pull-It", junkyard and from there, parade in.
that would be fitting, eh? i "made" a new driveshaft for the chevelle out of one from a 4x4 suburban. hello 1350 u-joints.
I'm afraid I will be at Norwalk all day. So if anyone wants to meet up with me, it will have to be there.

Just spectating. He'd probably recognize Aussie if he stumbles across him.
Wear a GRM shirt, it helps get identified
A good rally point could be a simple as McD's or similar, I can't be sure yet but will try to make a 12pm attendance.
I might go to the stop in Knoxville on Sunday since that is only a hour and a half drive. I am surprised they aren't stopping at Bristol instead of Knoxville though, because it makes more sense to go through Bristol rather than Knoxville, at least motorsports wise.
edit never mind Thunder Valley Nat'ls are next weekend so I assume they couldn't get the dragway.
I was a long hauler in 2003. I did the tour with my oldest son.
Towed a stainless steel teardrop trailer behind my '60 El Camino. Recommendation: If you ever do the tour, DO NOT tow a trailer. You will not be able to find 2 parking spaces together at any venue, which will leave you parking in the back. You will then be the last to leave, and have the same problem at the next stop.
My wife called me while I was on the tour to tell me she was pregnant.
You'll need to log in to post.
