I'm creating a travel sized tool set, using an 11.5" x 5" toolbox that has sentimental value.
Ideally I'm looking for a drop-in organizer that holds a ratchet and a small array of socket, maybe an extension or two.
Scouring ebay and amazon, looks like there are plenty of organizers that only hold sockets or wrenches.
Am I better off getting foam and customizing it myself?

Foam is great unless you buy tools or upgrade regularly.
For a portable box, I'd use foam all day, every day.

Foam 100% unless you want to 3D print everything.
11x5 is not much real estate, but probably enough for a single multi-bit screwdriver and a 1/4" drive set and a small crescent wrench and needlenose pliers.
I would definitely go 1/4" drive for size savings and then a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter if you need to run some 17, 18, or 19mm to fix stuff. Get a little container for some fuses and stash some zipties in it and you are in business!
