Preludes

Was just thinking, why doesn't preludes ever get much discussion around here? Especially the 97-01 models. They seem like fun cars. My brother had one.

every engine is "better suited" in a lighter car. an LS3 is "better suited" in a miata than a Vette. ;)

i always liked 'em. good choice if you want a reliable, fuel efficient, reasonbly practical sporty FWD.

Had a buddy with one that had 271k on it... he slide it 200yards on its roof thru a trailer park after hitting a utility pole. He was healthy enough to kick out the windshield and still get away before the cops got there.

I was surprised to find that only gets community service and time served... we thought he was totally screwed. What was the question again?

I always liked this. One of the three prettiest cars Honda made..

Quality cars. Just not the lightest and typically have higher buy in price.

I would rather have a Civic.

One of my most missed cars is an '88 Prelude S I got a couple years ago. It was carb'd, slow, and a blast. Not the best handling thing by any means but damn if it didn't take everything you could give it.

I think for that power and weight and price of the last Preludes, most people here go for the better balanced, rwd, BMW E36.

The heaviest, most luxurious and expensive of all Preludes; a better labeled as a GT car. That said, they're Hondas and that means they're well-engineered, pretty well built and (unfortunately) don't have much aftermarket support.

I've owned a 2nd-gen Lude since 2001 and the cars don't seem to get a lot of "love", but I've enjoyed mine.

They are still sub 3000 lb cars in an age of V6 Accords pushing two tons. They are great fun to drive.

I call them sports coupes. I think I usually reserve the term GT for RWD cars (but I don't want to open that can of worms, so disregard).

I think the reason the last gen Preludes dont get talked about much is because they are still expensive.

I bought my 06 Magnum AND my 01 Insight each for less than i could have gotten a really nice last-gen prelude for.

Autoweek had a listing on the 3 or 4 day Prelude Convention many years ago.

I wrote in and questioned it. Really? A Prelude Convention?

And they published it. I was proud that I insulted this car. Now I feel bad that I was that arrogant.

I just had a customer bring me one to trade.

a 97 with 145k miles. Nada said retail was still over $6k. You can get a p71 AND a miata for that.

I really want a third gen 2.0 Si with 4WS. They're hard to find with a working 4WS system, if you can find them. I've heard they're pretty expensive to fix properly, so they get disabled or sold to junkyards.

The second gen shares engines with the third gen Accord, and there's now ready made b-series swap mounts available off the shelf. It's always good news that such old cars are getting more aftermarket support.

I bought a 4th gen, 1992 S model for $350.00. It had some light accident damage and a ricer body kit slapped on it. But it's proven to be a solid car mechanically and returning the body and mechanicals to stock has been pretty easy so far. The 4th gen has some finicky electricals so try not to get one that's had the harness hacked up (had to remove an aftermarket alarm and an old cell phone from mine). The S model has a version of the F22 single cam w/o vtech so parts are cheap and easy to get. Mine has an automatic and my kid uses it as a daily driver, it's been very reliable so far, with the only issues due to 20+ year old parts (ignition module, starter, etc.) while it ain't no hot rod, it will get out of it's own way and has really decent handling. But it is a tad heavy for it's size.

I like the first generation but they are hard to find.

They cost as much as the Integra but didn't offer as much performance. That said the last one they made was fun to drive without comparisons

I just sold my 4th gen last month. I loved it, it was sporty and fun and while heavy it will get out of it's own way, although it didn't have enough brakes. Never got around to upgrading those.
Hard to find one around here that isn't half primer with a body kit and a fart can on it.

I bought a '98 'Lude new. Had it for 6 years. Loved it. I sold it because the SportShift tranny had served its purpose...I was driving back and forth from CT to NJ when I bought the car...and traffic was horrendous. I replaced it with an '04 RSX-S. The 'Lude handled better than the RSX-S. Even though the RSX-S was ~300 pounds lighter it do not feel that much quicker. There are days when I long for a clean 5th Gen 5MT 'Lude.

I could use a Lude every now and then myself. Kinda hard to pass the drug test at work though...

as would I, although one is going to be honda reliable and one isn't.
