Josh Sennett (bluej on here) has flat-towed Nick's e28 (around 3k lbs) with his Lincoln MKC. Turbo 4, so have to imagine it gets close to 30 on the highway. And I couldn't even keep up with him on hills towing 5k or so with a V8 Sequoia, lol.....

Which is either the same powertrain as in the turbo Escape 2.0l, or the larger 2.3l version. For info's sake.
Used 3.0 ecodiesel ram is what i'd suggest. It might go over your preferred budget, but in return you'll get a ridiculously useful/capable/comfortable vehicle that's going to make every towing minute of your life better.
