When I was 15, I got my first job and made my own money. I bought everyone in my family Christmas presents that year, I was so proud to be able to do it all on my own. The Impala had a back seat full of stuff, and I made one stop at work to run in and grab something. When I got back to the car, everything was gone. Not sure if the back door was locked or not, this was before central power locking, but the stuff was in plain view. I was crushed. All my hard work, all the money saved, and not for myself but for others...gone.

To this day, I keep valuables out of view, locked up, take them with me if I can and if they are really valuable, never leave them in the car unattended. If I had a convertible, I would add a lockbox to the trunk for double security, and never leave ANYTHING inside. I have heard people steal iPhone cords and loose change from cars in parking lots.

99 Cobra vert - top was down unless it was raining, snowing or under 50°F. I always put the top up at night (parked outside)

JK Wrangler - top goes down and doors come off every chance I got. When I lived in Florida, there were times where the top was down for 3 months at a time.

I lived there for 4 years and never had any issue with stuff being stolen until the week I moved across the country. They stole my ipod from the unlocked glovebox after opening my unlocked door. They also made off with about $5 in change. Now I have a steel glovebox with a barrel lock that is locked 24/7.

Left the top down often in the Miata. If it was sunny, the top would go up but not be latched. Center console was locked so that anything in the trunk was safe. Can't remember if the glovebox locked or not, but if it did it was always locked as well.

Sadly, I've owned a convertible (Spitfire) for over a year now and I haven't had the top down... well... technically it's "down" but that's because the hardtop is installed. And since the easiest place for me to store the hardtop is on the car, that's where it's been since I bought it. Fortunately, now that I have a shed, the hardtop should come off next Spring.

I pretty much always parked my last Spitfire with the top down. The MINI 'vert was generally parked top-up. The ex's new ND has such an amazingly quick top I think she always parks it with the top up, mainly to keep the interior clean.
