Why has nobody mentioned this:
Miata shell +
Miata motor +
Turbo kit
13s and will out-handle anything else listed.

I fixed the typo.
I would have to vote 5.0 + any of the cars you mentioned for challenge price. Some people find super cheap LSX but it is a bit harder and you still need to put a T-56 or live with an auto. No one sells T-56s for cheap.
I have a 5.0 fuel injected Volvo Wagon, and co-own a 5.0 Fuel Injected Miata Challenge Car (for sale!) and a 5.0 83 RX-7 Lemons Car. The motors are stupid cheap. You will spend more on the T-5 than you will on the motor.
I am no fan boy and would much prefer the LSX but I can't find them in the pick and pull and the other yards want an arm and a leg for them.
QFT
One of the true bang for the buck motors out there in pull-a-partdom . . . small footprint, cheap, and can be found EVERYWHERE!
300hp for $300 . . . sign me up.
It does seem strange that the Ford V8 wc T-5 carries a higher price tag than the motor and nearly identical wc T-5 behind their V6.

Lots of four speeds could live behind an LS engine.

But made another one... that should run 10s.... or faster, depending on tires.

Just as long as you make room for my cot
S-10 + blown GM 3.8 + exploder disc rear end + hoonage. Thats the recipe for my first all out non DD project whenever I get on slightly more stable ground.

There may not be room for both - one of us sleeps while the other drives your NSX around for fun.

It's all a moot point right now anyways, i've only got half of a 2 car garage at the moment. The other half is taken up by a fully (and i mean FULLY) built to the hilt S13 coupe, a tire changer, and 5 motors and a few transmissions. And a hoist, a couple toolboxes, and 3 engine stands. Oh, and a grill. Gotta have a grill.
There IS a loft, though?
Forget LS and think LM for starters. Go from there. Add turbo or turbos or supercharger or what ever and bolt in what ever car you can dream up.
My current bucket list project is a LM4 in a 951. 400 HP is no problem with a cam, headers. I think that would be enough to keep me happy for a while.
The lm4's are still 650-1200 depending on millage etc But the lm7 is just another small block V8 $400 should get you a good one. One that needs a rebuild should be almost free.
A Plymouth Sundance...

Or maybe this... but I have no frign clue what this is?????
And since I am on a roll here...
What about this one?
Oh wait.. That is a 3.8 Series II in the front of a Shelby Charger...

Screw that, i just saw that you live in Colorado Springs. I'm coming to you. I can relocate through work to there, i've thought about it many times.
Anyone remember Hot Rod's 400CI caddy-powered Chevette. I want to say they did that for $500 all-in.

Yes I do, still have the issue, but it was 2k.
Greg Voth wrote:tuna55 wrote: Lots of four speeds could live behind an LS engine.Do tell.
JD still has my hot rod where they went through all of the combos, but basically with a spacer or milling, you can bolt any classic chevy transmission onto an gen III/IV if you're willing to skip one bolt. All of this obsessing about getting just the right T5 built up enough or a T56 or something even more $$$ is crazy if the challenge beckons, you don't need 5 speeds to race, just to cruise. Get an old muncie or whatever and deal with a cool old four speed.

I could've done it for a quarter of that.

I could have collected all the parts at double that, lost interest and sold it for 1/4 of that!
There are a lot of E30s, 944s and FC RX7s for sale locally right now. The cheapest ones are the E30s.
Right now I'm leaning heavily towards a ford 302 swapped E30. I could be easily convinced to go SBC instead, but I haven't yet gotten to any info on that swap in the e30 chassis. As much as I am interested in going off the beaten path, I have to take budget into consideration. Backyard engineering and development can add up...
