what exactly would happen f you put R134a into an earlier car made fro R22? assuming you purged the system and changed the accumulator, would it work at all? or maybe just not get as cold?

It wouldn't work. If that was the only change, it wouldn't get cold.

I know some people that do nothing other than swap refrigerants and it worked OK. Most of the time the o-rings and reciever drier need to be changed out because of contamination and resistance to the different lubricating oils.
