Both my car and truck and motorcycle have been crashed and saved from the junkyard. If a car tracks and drives true and doesn't have much frame damage I don't see what to be afraid of. Check the tires for uneven wear as a car in a crash might have suspension damage that make a "proper" alignment impossible.

A quick Miata scan will net you several in your price range if you don't mind looking in Atlanta, Chattanooga, etc. I sold my "99 recently for $5k and it was in really nice shape. It's not alone in that price range either.

I bought my '99 Miata a few months ago for $5500. My wife already wants me to sell it and buy a convertible with seating for four but I remain ambivalent about it.

If you pay the "right" price and you can verify proper damage repair, I see no reason not to buy a rebuilt title vehicle especially if you are planning on keeping the vehicle for a long time. I doubt that you can make money on it if you are trying to flip it. Rebuilt title cars make excellent DD for people with long commutes or as a first vehicle for a student.
I learned body work as a teenager working in a body shop for my dad who as a State Farm agent could buy the lightly damaged popular cars and rebuild them. I got to drive them as advertisement until we found a buyer. I had a Nova SS 350 and Buick Skylark GS convertible under that plan.
Lenders and insurance companies do get upset when they realize that they have taken on a car at 200% of its value so they as shy on rebuilt titles. I have sued more than a few dealers on the grounds that they failed to notify the buyer of the title status including vehicles that fell off the truck or was otherwise damaged in transport including a Chev Cavalier and BMW M5.
There is a famous case where a dealer sold such a car to a lawyer in Alabama and the judgment was for several million dollars! BMW got "homecooked" and later the judgment was reduced by the Court of Appeals to the value of the car.
