I am, shall we say, a habitual over-researcher.
That said, today I noticed the muffler on my FJ62 has rusted out, and I'd like to get that replaced. My normal course of action would be to spend a month researching the hell out of mufflers before picking one, but I'm going to try something different this time...
In 140 characters or less, convince me as to what cheap-ass muffler I should buy. The winner will get a free issue of Classic Motorsports!
the cheapest one on jcwhitney?
Cherry Bombs have a certain ZAV quality if you spray paint some warnings on them.
cheap universal turbo muffler
I just went through this with my Saab 900 Classic. And the answer was going to be an Walker cheapo special from Ebay. But English Swedish Spares saved me from that by having a complete cat back system from a parts car for $50. Wishing you the same success.
I needed a muffler, and Jegs had one that fit exactly and cost $50. Thrush. It's not loud, and actually sounds pretty good.
Go down to the local muffler shop and dig around in their dumpster?

$88 no way! For that I'm going with what's treated me well so far: Magnaflows. I'm talking like, $20.
I would get Thrush glasspack with a perforated core and a lot of length for $28 shipped;

i got two near-new flowmasters for $40 on cl.
i even got a new/take-off camaro muffler once for $20. i put that beauty on a '94 accord i was restoring.

go to your local pull-a-part, find muffler that isn't rusted out, 2 min, a battery powered sawsall and you should have a nice used $5 muffler, 10 min if you use a hacksaw...
Walker round muffler that fits with whatever size piping you need. Had a 2.5" one on my Cressida and it was quiet and flowed like a mutha.
Summit Racing brand glass pack or turbo muffler
Do you want it to sound mean, industrial, burbley, quiet, what? Cut the current muffler and if you like the sound but just want it quieter put on the biggest and longest straight through you can afford. If you want to alter the sound but not quiet it all that much get a flow diverter type with no fiberglass inside (flowmaster). If you just want it quiet as possible get one that has a huge can, massively molests the the flow patterns, has lots of sound deadener inside, AND is shown to flow well.
Burbley=hollow can with a pipe coming out of each end.
I'm all for the Cherry Bomb. Welded one on my truck and it fell off and then I welded it on again and I've been happy since. Yep. Still getting that welding thing down, but the Cherry Bomb has passed the 75 mph drag test.
