Looking for new 6 point cam lock harnesses for driver and instructor/passenger, HANS compatible. Is it worth going with high dollar (eg Sparco Profi III HANS) or will something like Ultra Shield or G Force 3" harnesses be sufficient at half the price? Recommend me a good harness - equal parts safety and value. Also, clip in or bolt in and why?
I've tested G-Force a couple of times in SpecMiata . Worked well
Not all sanctioning bodies will accept the clip in. As far as the belts go, I've tried a bunch of different ones, and the only thing that really seems to make them better or worse is the stiffness of the material. Too stiff, they can be very hard to get as tight as I like on the hips. I've tried pull up and pull down, and really the big thing is to find one that will allow you to pull them tight either through the hole in the side of the seat, or above the hole. Placement is critical for me- I'll spend an hour moving the lap belts up and down an inch or so. Shoulder harness is less important for adjustibility, but height of the crossbar is critical. As close to 90 to the seatback, directly off the top of the shoulder is best, and I have no problem with slightly up- less than 5, although there are sanctioning bodies out there that insist on down. If you ever run into a tech guy that wants them pulling down more than 10*, tell him to pound sand.
I've heard rumors of belts with ratchets to cinch the lap belt down. I'm curious about them.
I've tried a bunch in other peoples cars, and what I've learned is:
While the actual level of protection is likely identical between the bargain priced G Force stuff and the crazy expensive stuff - the ease of use, convenience and "nice factor" has value.
When I put seats and harnesses on both sides of my M3 I researched to the point of full analysis paralysis, stepped back and bought 2 sets of Schroth Profi II-6 HANS. The rationale behind a 2" lap belt locating the pelvis better made mechanical sense to me, and I wear a HANS device on track, always, so the 3" to 2" shoulder belts are good. Schroth harnesses are very well made, and HMS offers very good customer support.
My race car came with the same harness. I find the belts very easy and intuitive to use. When alone at the track and pressed for time it can be tough to get suited up, in the car and do earplugs/balaclava/arm restraints/HANS/lap belts/shoulder harnesses/helmet/HANS tethers/gloves/cinch belts tight/get to grid.
An easy-to-use harness helps.
Thanks for the input, keep it coming! Still trying to figure out the advantage of clip in vs bolt in. Also, came across this article and wanted to reference it here in case this helps others in the future:

Camlock is totally worth it, no matter the brand. We have some Crow enterprises 3" belts in the Lemons car, and they work well. Ours are formula style belts, which have a little less interference with your frank and beans, but take an extra few seconds to put together.

+1 Sonic speaks the truth, I've done latch style and camlock and camlock is worth every extra cent in the long run.
I've had a bunch of different harnesses and I've come to appreciate the higher quality ones because I also use the cars on the street with the harnesses. Getting in and out of a fully caged car with harnesses is a pain but high quality harnesses make it easier and quicker and I think they are really worth it for ease of use. I run the Schroth Profi II for Hans with clips. I set the car up with multiple positions to clip onto to for varying size people. I'd hate to ever crash and have a navigator get injured and wonder if better harness angles might have helped.
Make sure you follow these instructions: http://www.gforce.com/pdf/Harness_Install_Info.pdf
Doing tech at the club I instruct with, many harnesses missed step 4.
