I've been really busy with work the past few days, but finally had some time last night to try my first ever speaker repair. I got a kit from speakerworks.com (for less that $14 including shipping!) for a new foam surround and some adhesive. I got this recommendation of of jaguar forums because a replacement speaker is basically NLA in my tax bracket, and even finding another pure subwoofer that is 6x9 and dual voice coil is not an easy task.
Without further ado - remove speaker from car:
ewwww. The surround was totally ripped out, but the torn cone was my hamfisted disassembly technique.
Cut the old foam surround away from the cone
Inspect the tear
Re-glue the tear using adhesive in the kit (I think it was nitrile rubber cement)
Scrape old adhesive off and test fit new surround. I had to trim a bit with scissors.
Glue foam to speaker cone, let cure for 20-30 minutes
Finally, make sure the cone is 'centered' meaning move it up and down and make sure you don't feel it hit the supports, and then glue the outer foam to the speaker frame. Is that a seatbelt buckle in the corner?
Why yes, my wife's workstation, complete with bmw 750il computer chair (heat and power functions still work if you plug it into the wall). /showingoff
Here it is back in the car for a test run:
And here is a cell phone video of it working - Watch soon cuz I bet youtube will take me down for "piracy of somebody's rap song".
Overall, i'm really happy with the kit from speakerworks.com! They also sent me really detailed instructions that led me through the process. SWEET!
