I was watching the Barrett Jackson auction last night and they almost stopped that auction due to the storm.
I didn't know both auctions were going on simultaneously.
I believe there are about a half-dozen auctions that go on in Scottsdale this week and w/e. B-J is just the one that gets the most publicity. They mentioned one of the other auction tents blew away and ended up on a major highway. They didn't say it was from the R-S auction.
Not happy campers indeed... but I suppose that's why they have insurance...
The insurance claims and legal mess that is going to cause will be around for years!!! I just hope not to many cars got trashed
"Well, it's got a few scratches and a busted windshield. I know you wanted $50,000 but I'll give you $500.00 for it."
Remember, Andy, Joe and I are here and Joe just drove through all this crap to ge here from LA in the Edsel. He made it fine. I told Andy we should get out of the tents at Gooding about half an hour before all this went down,
We are okay, but of course at the RM British auction last night, everyone was talking about it.
Those huge circus tents they use have nothing in common with a true camping tent. They can take a little wind but they have more in common with sails from a square rigged ship of old. Modern camping tents are tested on Mt. Washington to find out how well they stand up to wind.
At the French Grand Prix in 1980 they had a concours tent set up, and some smart guy decided to land a Harrier jet next to it. I remember watching the wash off those motors and wondering how much gravel spray was making it through the gaps in the tent!
Oh man that is bad!! Just about the only thing worse than it happening in the first place is to have a car in there and have to watch it from a distance knowing what is happening (or potentially happening) inside. That's crazy!!
when was it ? yr before last ..maybe.. at the GRM corral at the 24 hr there was a huge storm and the GRM tent suffered some damage....
had my 25000 original mile galaxie 500 convertible in the tent-suffered 23,000.00 in damages- Russo steele was getting warned hours before the tent cam down that the stakes were pulling loose and choose not to do anything about it. Then they refused to let use in to protect our cars for a day and a half. Not happy with Russo Steele. Have cars at all the auctions and this has been the worst experience in my life.
In reply to larryevans:
That's awful. I had a car in there as well and my take is a complete 180 from yours. Russo and Steele is the one auction in particular that I come into Scottsdale for every year. I was there Thursday from the early morning and what I saw was that the Fire Marshall and the tent company was there monitoring everything all day. Also, I heard that the Fire Marshall made Barrett close down all of their tents except the main auction block because of the storm and even considered shutting it down after Russo's tent went down. Sounds to me like everyone was at the mercy of the storm and taking orders from the city! I thought that Russo and Steele did a terrific job with a horrible accident.
