Last RWD hatch *ever* was an '80s Starlet AFAIK...and I get the difference between a hatchback and a coupe where the hood and rear glass move together. A hatchback has a blunt back end and definitely no significant backward projection of sheet metal after the bottom of the back glass.
then you have never looked at BMW 318ti.. there is approximatly 6 inches of sheetmetal between the rear edge of the glass and the rear edge of the car. This does not include the bumper of the straight drop from the rear edge of the hatch and the bumper. The BMW hatch is very blunt on the ass end

If BMW was a person, I'd smack them on the back of the head for not bringing the 1-series hatchback to the states.
Deep down they'd know it was deserved, but would still argue that the 318ti proved to them that a hatchback model was a no-go in the states. I wouldn't buy their story though, as most people with half a brain would understand that using a relatively under-powered, controversially styled derivative of an existing model wasn't going to sell in big numbers in the first friggin place.
For the record I like the 318ti, and almost bought one recently. I don't think the world at large shares my fandom though.
the 318ti was not even that big a seller in europe.. Personally I think the hatch is the prettiest of the 1 series cars... but really.. if BMW can sell the X6.. then it can afford to bring the 3 door 1 series here
They won't bring that here thanks to the Mini........
D'oh, so the RWD bit was hiding in plain sight right in the title
Wouldn't the Corvette and Porsche 968 or 928 fit that definition? The Panamera would too...as fugly as it is.
A little older but the Mighty AMC Spirit and Eagle SX-4 were rear wheel / 4wd hatches.
Gremlin too! Pacer as well if you are caught up with high fashion!

There is a difference between Fast Backs and hatch Backs.. regardless.. he was asking 90s. Not too many vegas were built in that time period
I agree, there is a difference. A fastback has a sloped back with a trunk lid. A hatch has a hatch, even if the roof is sloped. My '65 Mustang is a fastback. My '85 Mustang was a hatchback, because it's rear window moved with the trunk lid. I can't think of any reason to define it any differently, but whatever.
I used the Vega as an example not because I thought it was made in the 90's, but because one version of it is a fastback with a hatch, thus it is a hatchback.
In any case, for me this isn't worth any further discussion, just like all the other debates here that never get any consensus, like when the musclecar era was, or what the difference is between a motor and engine, what constitutes a street car versus a race car, do guns kill or people kill people, etc... I'm not going to change my mind based on anything I read here and neither is anyone else, so let's move on, shall we?

Roadmaster/caprice wagon
those are stationwagons.. sorry
For RWD you could get an Alfa GTV6 though 1987
Now consider these RWD with some free power to the fronts as well. OK, so these are a bit later and blur the destinction between hatch and wagon. Scoobi implied they were a wagon, Saab implied they were a hatchish
In the 90's, but still blurry on the wagon hatch thing. OBS?
I consider the back glass being integral with the trunklid = hatchback
By that definition... my wife's E46 325iT wagon is a RWD hatchback.
- has hatch
- window in hatch
- window in hatch is integral to hatch
- rear wheels are driven
Looks like winnar.

I still believe 4 doors + hatch = wagon.....the definition will change depending on who interprets it.

So a Vega wasn't a hatchback? I always defined a hatch back by whether or not it had a hatch.
the Vega was a Kammback.. the badge on the side said so..

Good point. While I think we all know (with the possible exception of the Impreza) the difference between a hatch and a wagon, I'm not sure how to define the difference. I don't think it's the number of doors, because then cars like the 4 door Golf would be a wagon. To me it has to do with the length of the area behind the rear seats and possibly if that model is offered in both a 4 door hatch and a wagon version, but I can't say I'm sure about that.

Kammback was their name for the wagon, not the fastback. This is a Vega Kammback:
This is what I was talking about:
Anyway, are we talking about what the manufactures named the cars of what type they are commonly called? Ford never called any Mustang a fastback, but I bet you have! So have I and so have just about every car guy on the planet, but Ford never did. I was talking about the type of car, not the name of it.
OH I just realized:
smart fortwo is RWD and a hatchback!

Yes, but he was asking about cars not golf carts.

Miatas aren't REALLY much bigger.
Fastback is a style, hatchback is a function. They are not mutually exclusive. Many hatchbacks are fastbacks, like say a Vega. Most 60's fastbacks did not have hatches. Then there is the Dodge Shadow which is a hatchback but not a fastback.
Alfa Milanos were only made in normal 4 door sedan form from 87-89, and the 75 (same thing everywhere not in the US) was made a lot longer, but still only the one body style with various engines and minor styling changes.
