BUT!!!! Do it WITHOUT using the 350z transmission.
Yes, I know the 350/G35 manual trans IS the easy option. I'm not asking for easy. I need to know OTHER options that are hopefully dirt cheap and still somewhat effective.
I'm all ears.

I dont know anything about anything but perhaps look into the infiniti m30? 90-91. It had the vg30 in a s13 chassis i believe
You guys are both talking about A VG, its not similar at all to a VQ bolt pattern.
Nothing else bolts up other then the VQ30DET auto trans.
However, I am adapting it a KA trans, but thats all custom welding.
I'm putting mine in a s13, should be fun in a s13 with angle mods for a winter daily...
VQ30 with a KA trans teaser....

My Frontier has teh VQ. IT is also offered with a 6 speed manual. As are the x terras. I am not sure if it is the same transmission as the 350Z/G35 or not.
Why no 350Z tranny? Is this a cost factor? An external dimensions factor? A "just trying to be different" factor?
pretty sure you can swap a Z31 manual trans into an M30 by mixing and matching some parts from Nissan.
check F31club.com
I guess that doesnt help the question about the VQ engine at all though.

It may be the same transmission, but I would bet it has different ratios.
My departed 05 Frontier had the VQ40 and 6 speed manual. Fun stuff. I'm not sure if it mates to the VQ30. A thread on nicoclub claims the following gear ratios:
4.368:1 first gear ratio, 2.518:1 second gear ratio, 1.743:1 third gear ratio, 1.283:1 fourth gear ratio, 1:1 fifth gear ratio, 0.769:1 sixth gear ratio 3.966:1 reverse gear ratio
FS6R31A transmission
The trans from a VQ powered Nissan truck WILL work but like the 350/G35 trans, its a cost issue. I'm not afraid of spending cash mind you, its just that this is for a Lemons/Chump car and I actually WANT to play by the rules. Being fast while cheating is not cool and not honorable.
The KA option is interesting. How close are you to getting it to work?
Other options that are being considered at T5 or about any other 4-5 speed trans.
I also seem to recall that the VQ auto trans has a removable bell housing that may bolt up to something else. This is also being investigated.
That was basically last year....I haven't touched it since. But the idea was to add material where it was needed, and were the bolts go through use alu tube that fits the VQ bolts and weld/gusset those to the trans. Im probably going to start messing with it soon, but I need to learn to TIG so I don't have to have my friends do it haha.
Also, this uses the RWD oil pan and 350z starter.Gotta have that. Im also using the maxima flywheel and clutch, and that needed some clearancing inside the bellhousing. Honestly, get a auto bellhousing and weld it to your KA trans. A guy on engineswaptech did that and ran like 360whp and similar or more torque through it into an SR trans. So its doable.
I'm trying to build a VQ30-5speed S13 for a winter beater. With angle mods. You know, because classy racecar.

i like this thread. there are so many good VQ's just wasting away in salvage yards. it is our duty to expose all the possibilities.
Have you thought of the Vorshlag approach? Just buy a bellhousing as a safety item and bolt whatever tranny you want on there? You could also just make yourself a bellhousing from scratch. Seriously, this is GRM.
Whats more GRM then using the bare minimum mods and material and getting it done as fast as strong as possible?

I have a complete running VQ , with the 350Z oil pan and a 350Z 6-speed attached that I would love to get out of my garage. You can have it all for $400. I am sick of looking at it.
email me if you are interested. I am pretty sure the transmission alone is worth more then that plus you get the 350Z oilpan which is what is required to make it mount to a RWD tranny. The eninge has around 100K Miles and is from a Maxima. It has a set of mounts on it right now for a s13 240sx. You can have those as well.
