Obscure question- anyone have the distance from the bellhousing to the shift lever of an RX-8 transmission? Considering the possibility of swapping the t50 from behind the 4age in the Midget and need dimensions.

Don't have the dimensions, but are you sure that box will work behind a 4AGE? I believe the RX8 tranny has an integral bellhousing. Now, the 86-88 Turbo II definitely has a separate bellhousing and the trans can easily be adapted to a different housing, the NA cars have an integral bellhousing.

RX8 transmission:

It looks like a separate bellhousing but, IIRC, the bellhousing also includes the front bearing retainer and the 'snout' for the release bearing. Meaning some serious fabrication would be needed to make it work.

The RX7 Turbo II tranny is on the left in this photo. IIRC from the front of the bellhousing to the center of the shift pivot is 31 1/2". I might still have my notes around.

Notice how the shifter housing bolts to the top of the tailshaft on the RX7 piece, unlike the RX8? It's very easy to move the shifter forward 4" without even opening the transmission; I have done it on two different transmissions. It can be moved forward even more but would at that point involve aluminum welding.

This adapter was made for the Miata version of the 6 speed.... but since the box is common, it should work on the Rx8 box too.

Btw... the box with the shortest tailhousing**... is the Altezza box. Here are a pair of moddified Altezza AZ6 transmissions

** - RX8 box looks almost to be the same length

Thanks guys- especially for the pictures. I may end up going with the miata trans. I've done a conversion before on my MG prior to the engine swap wherein we bought an adapter plate that was made to convert the datsun trans to the MG engine. I had something like this in mind.
I found a guy on club4ag down in OZ who made a plate to convert the miata 6 speed to the 4age and has been driving it daily. I think its doable as long as I'm careful (and I'm lucky to have a machinist who is also my uncle).
Anywho, it looks as if the miata shift lever can be sufficiently shortened to make it work- just wish I had a real dimension to work with- I'll take the 31 1/2" and see how it works. I also like how the rx8 clutch release is at the top of the bellhousing. Make plumbing, bleeding etc easier on this application.
