Hey guys
I usually just lurk on this site, but I have a question that someone might be able to help with
my sisters 93 saturn had the pass side window get stuck in the down position.
She's trying to get another year out of the car and the dealer wants 400 to put in a new regulator.
Is this a common problem on these cars? Is it likely something cheaper like the switch? All other windows work fine.
Any suggestions on how to get the window up so she can just leave it there?
Thanks
You may be able to take the door panel off and muscle the window up. You could also go to a pick-n-pull junkyard and get a new regulator or switch for cheap, shouldn't be too hard to change.
or grab a door with roll up windows...they rarely fail.
have you looked into why it got stuck? It could just be off the track

Thanks for the replies. I guess I should give a little more info.
My sister said that the window does not make any noise or appear to do anything at all when the switch is actuated. It rolled down with no problem, but will not roll back up.
The dealer took the door panel off and said it needed a new regulator, and they refused to just roll it back up because it was a "safety issue". I am assuming if it was just off track, they would have said so and corrected it.
The car is about 3000 miles away from me, so I'm just trying to give my sister the best suggestions I can on what to do.
I guess what I really want to know is if it is feasible to get the window back into the up position and have it stay there - with no safety issue.
Thanks,
Neil
safety issue? sounds like BS to me. Try a new switch first and work from there. If the motor is not making any sounds, it is not getting power

I have seen one of the few manual window failures. It was like gears where striped or some such thing of that nature.
They wouldn't put the window back up because she would never have it fixed. There is no safety issue to stuck windows as long as the door opens.
Generally, replacing the window regulator is going to fix this problem. While it may be just a stripped gear or a bad motor, when a regulator can be had for less than $100 it's just easier to replace the whole thing. $400 is not out of line to have the dealer do it, but she may be able to cut that in half with an independent mechanic. If she isn't mechanically inclined I wouldn't have her start throwing parts like switches and whatnot at it.
If she can grab the edge of the window she may be able to pull it back up while someone bangs on the door and plays with the switch. However, getting the door panel off is easy and she should be able to get in there with a little instruction and just push it back up. Or she could do what every other woman does and use a garbage bag and some duct tape.
edit: looks like the regulator for that year is a little hard to get, but autozone has the motors for $70 or so. I'd just have her take it to a local mechanic and get it fixed.
