I need a German masochist to help. I saw in traffic today an e30 5 series. It had, what appeared to be, louvers INSIDE the rear window! I did a double take. I have never seen louvers INSIDE the car.
is this a German car trend? An aftermarket option? Looked like a book shelf in the back window.
I've seen wood louvers on e30s (3 series). The aftermarket makes them.
Not my cup of tea.
BTW, BMW had a sunshade option for the e30. Not very common, but they pop up every once in a while.

Nope, they had a pleated blind in the rear window. At least, E39s did. It could be raised or lowered via a control on the dash.
It's not clear if you're talking about a 3 series or a 5 series, but euro specification e28 5 series cars had a rollup rear window shade available as a factory option - my M535i has one. You could also get rollup shades in the rear doors, too.
I believe louvered blinds were an aftermarket thing. If you look at pictures of cars in Australia, they're a pretty common thing there on many different brand vehicles. http://www.autoshades.com.au/
I just know of it as an aftermarket item, I would guess around late 60's-early 70's as being popular. I sure dig the exterior aluminum ones too.

I said 5 series. But anyways, that blind does look close to what it was. It was inside the car though. Some of the folks here keep posting pics of externally mounted louvers. It was very clearly mounted INSIDE the interior of the vehicle. Not on the outside.

Sooo ... it wasn't an e30 ... that's what Stuart was referring to.

You said e30 5 series which doesnt exist. And it looks like the two pictures both have interior blinds.
Having a bad day?

Ummm, from here I see two posted pics, both with internal louvers...?
Heck, this is really tasty!:
