Now there's a title that should get your attention.
Sorry for the tease though, its not quite what you think.
I had to drive 70 miles or so to go get this today. Hmmm....the F350 at 12mpg or the smart at 43mpg....
The guy at the machine shop looked like he was ready to kill me when I pulled up, that "I meet you here on my day off and you show up with a car that will NOT carry this" Fit fine (obviously) with room to spare.
Just a little more proof that small "impractical" cars aren't all that impractical.

It's only a matter of time until somebody does it for real, though.
waits for video of haybusa power smart
What's the SBC going into?
Did the machine shop guy say anything after it was in the car?
berkeleying awsome, if you can put that in a smart, i wonder what someone can fit into the back of an escort hatch with no rear seat

After seeing the fit back there I can say I think its possible....probably loose the passenger space, but it could be done.

He relaxed when I told him I tested it with a junk block before I left. After it was in he mostly just asked the usual questions about the car.
Its going in a Studebaker Lark. Its a 383 bottom end and I have a full Edelbrock performer RPM top end. Although Im not buiding this for the challenge Im technically still below the budget. But the need for things like oh....brakes, will put me over the top. Got some excellent deals on the engine though.
I like the body on the larks, those have some clean lines

Reminds me of a shoebox nova with a little flair.
Its got a long way to go but I'm not rushing it.

I put a clothes washer and dryer in/on an 81 Escort. With the hatch closed. The washer went inside, the dryer went on the roofrack.

I wanna find the picture my dad had from his sophmore year of college. He went from Chicago to Des Moines with a full dorm room in a 68 MGB, and he has the picture of the thing loaded to the gills. It was pretty cool

I've fit two swivel-rocker living room chairs in a '91 323 (same as an escort inside) and a pushmower, weedwacker, leafblower, and gas cans in an escort hatch, with the hatch closed. Also, two adult bicycles laying down and two passengers in the 323, again with hatch closed
Maybe you should put the V8 in the Smart and put the Smart's engine in the Studebaker

This 383/TKO was in a wicked '55 Commander, until TZ built this awesome '59.
Fun Fun!
Well, the Impala SS drivetrain is a FWD V8, yes? That would fit perfectly back there!
Pictures of the 'Baker?
I was mistaken, i was thinking of a diferent 'baker. But still, the lark sound like it's gonna be fun

Yeah, the Lark is a bit smaller and thankfully lighter than a commander, I'd still trade it for a commander in a heartbeat though ;)
Only photo I have of it not dissasembled right now.
Started out as next year's BABE candidate but I've gone a little overboard with the build now.
my brother and I brought a full size axle home for his 1964 SS Impala in the back of my 1980 Datsun 310GX.
I think the springs were flattened.
I looked out the window at work tonight, I saw a dirtbike in the backseat of a VW cabrio.

This is exactly why the 1st gen Scion xB makes so much sense as a delivery/utility van. Efficient and practical.
Awesome that you got your Smart to do that.

I've pulled similar freight hauling tricks with a GT6 (pulled over with 6 passengers once).
Big heavy things fit OK, but if you ever have to stop suddenly ......ouch!!!!
