So I have had the privilege of driving a rental this past weekend. It's a 2014 Toyota Camry SE. I'll be honest and I rolled my eyes when I saw the attendant pull the car up at the rental place, but it definitely isn't like the Camry I grew up with.
It took a little getting used to but after a couple days, I got a good feeling for the Camry.
Drivetrain-
This is this SE version of the Camry, so it comes with the 180hp 2AR-FE 4-Cylinder mated to a 6-speed automatic. For 180hp, it pulls this car along very well. Passing is not something you have to worry about, there's enough grunt down low to get you out of harms way. I had plenty of pulls on some two-lane black top passing farm equipment and cattle trailers. Being an SE model, the transmission has a sport mode that includes flappy paddles. Surprisingly, when in sport mode, the computer holds the gears into the redline, which helps for more spirited driving.
Steering and Suspension-
So, I'm going to lay it out there: I do not like electric steering. This is no exception. It's numb and there's very little feedback from the road (except bumps), kind of like the old arcade racing games before force feedback became the norm.
Suspension is like most non-sport, mid-size passenger sedans of today, you can feel most road imperfections, but it stays pretty tight in the corners. I got a chance to take the Camry down some windy river roads that showed that it could handle some curves pretty well.
The P215/75R17 Bridgestone Turanzas do a good job of keeping down the road noise. They have pretty descent traction on dry pavement and in the rain.
Interior-
The interior is not too shabby. Toyota really tried to make it look like a luxury car interior with some stitching across the soft material on the dashboard. The seats have a nice bolster to them and were pretty comfortable overall. The synthetic leather though feels extremely cheap. I get the reasoning to use it, but it's a little ridiculous how hard it is.
Space was not an issue seeing that I am 6'2" and I had a friend who is the same height sit in the back seat and he was plenty comfortable. There was definitely enough elbow room too on each side of the seats. The trunk had plenty of room to haul most anything that you could fit in a car trunk, it was quite deep and with the fold down rear seats it definitely increased the depth.
The controls were typical Toyota and were very easy to use. The HVAC controls were very simple and really don't need explanation. The steering wheel controls were easy, but the way they were designed looks a little awkward, but after a while you don't even notice them.
The gauges were easy to read, but my biggest gripe is the "Average MPG" gauge which made no sense on this particular model seeing that it was obviously made for the Hybrid, plus you can select through the digital read out to tell you what the average MPG is. The blue needles were different and didn't bother me, but I would have preferred red needles. At night the blue is just too soft, there needs to be a more aggressive color.
The radio is pretty decent. I figured it out pretty quickly without having to read an owners manual. Syncing my phone over the Bluetooth was pain free and rather simple. It made calls without hassle and the steering controls worked well. It played Pandora with no problem and even showed the tracks.
Overall, I liked the Camry. If this was a daily driver, I would be very comfortable with it. The SE is pretty nice for what it is. There are definitely better cars, but this would be a good car for the significant other that isn't picky, but wants an automatic. The SE package definitely makes the Camry a little more bearable for the person who wants a sportier car. I personally would think a 6-speed manual would be great in this car and would make even more fun. It definitely doesn't feel like the Camry of yore.
