I recently picked up a set of 14" Miata BBS wheels for pretty cheap with the center caps and special tool. I originally had thoughts of cleaning them up and putting them on fleabay since they regularly fetch upwards of $400 there.

After cleaning one up most of the way, I'm doubting I could get that much for them. They look alright from a distance but upclose there are lots of various spots and schtuff from where the weights were ( the brake-dust-brown in the little crannies there between spokes is what the whole wheel looked like before cleaning).
So what's the GRM opinion on their value? Would I be able to find someone that would trade some 15" miata wheels plus some cash for these (what I'd like to do) or should I just clean them up as best I can and keep 'em?
Blast them, paint them, and then ask for more money?
I bet those would like nice powdercoated black...

if they are aluminum, dont powdercoat them. might make them crack prone

plus painting is cheaper and easier
Oven cleaner, sandpaper, and a tub of Mother's. See my "I fixed my RX-7" thread from last week.
Sell the caps seperately and one at a time.
The wheels can be expensive but the caps are gold!
They used to retail for $75 each for replacements. I could not find that link but I did find this one with Miata caps for $133 each!

Lets say $50 each for a cap. These a popular for coming off, or being stolen, so existing BBS owners will be your best customers. This will net you $200 (or more) and you still have the rims.
Anyone who is really interested in the fact that the rims are lightweight will likely want them for racing. Anyone racing will likely use the rims without the caps. The racer also will likely be more into function over fashion and only care that the rims are round and true. I bet the set of 4 will bring $200.
There you go, you have made your $400 plus whatever the wrench is worth.

most alloys I thought were cast (or forged) aluminum alloy (no one would use pure aluminum)? If that were the case, wouldn't most powdercoated wheels be aluminum?
