Sheeple. That's the issue. It's talk like this that will get rid of steering wheels.

When everone is driving in a google car ill still be in my miata weaving in and out of "traffic" hey maybe if theres no dummies driving anymore there wont be any traffic cops.
That said I live in a place where I have found the worst drivers, (stats say nola is the worst, I lived there and this place takes the cake) I will be happy when these retards stop trying to drive.
While I take it as a foregone conclusion that drivers will be replaced in the future,I wonder where the auto insurance industry is going to land? If I am not driving, who is liable for anything that goes wrong?

There will still be tax enforcement officers out there raising funds. They'll be looking for people doing illegal things like driving their own cars.
In reply to NOHOME:
And when we arent driving the cars anymore why would we be interested in buying a new one every year or two? They would be more like a pc and only replace it when it craps out. By the way does anyones gps still try to tell them to turn right...into a lake? That will be interesting.
I can see it now. "In today's news, rescue workers fish out 73 google cars from a local fishing hole"

it'll be a long long long time before the no driver car is the only way to go … with the millions and millions of roads (public and private) in this country it's going to take several lifetimes to get them all mapped … and even then trying to get all the driveways mapped will be nearly impossible
In reply to wbjones:
You must not have seen google street view. Google has been trying very hard the past few years to map ever road which they probably have done. And they are the main ones with the driverless cars. You would be surprised whats going on behind closed doors

I personally love seeing new Mercedes brake automatically when I merge in front of them.....

not a pray in hell that they've managed to map all the roads in the country
doubt that they've done private roads, and I'm sure they haven't done driveways … much less parking lots … then consider all the construction that reroutes the highway a few feet one way or the other … or when they shut down one lane, and route the traffic through the median into oncoming traffic and then back again …
I've seen google street view of my road … my driveway is there … but zero data for driving up it .. much less parking/turning around … nor is there any info on either of the private roads at the end of my street

QFT
Don't worry, when the AI cars go haywire, Lisa and Lorna will be there for us.
(now go watch eX-Driver)

There will be, but it's okay, you can hack those.

When leaving VIR my wifes built in gps directed her to go out onto the racetrack and do half a lap and exit at the pits along the back strait.
It's not even remotely likely that the cars will use gps for the "skills" of driving in traffic.
Gps can tell them where they are in real time but i think the real breakthroughs are crash avoidance, lane changes, merging etc. all those things are separate from GPS.
Not that I'm telling you guys anything you don't already know.
Edit: I might enjoy sending my truck out for mulch, having it back up my trailer and dump it in my backyard!
Self driving cars must be more common that we think.
The news always seems to have a story about ' Tonight an SUV ran through a crowd of people'. The accidents never seem to be the responsibility of the driver.

Or go back to the hardware store for the 3rd time during that small plumbing project

just like guns that "just went off" …...
Eleven accidents in how many driven miles? A thousand miles and 11 crashes would bad. 10K miles isn't much better. 100K still sucks.
Accident avoidance is part of the responsibility of driving. Sounds like they need to work on that.
Since several crashes occurred while people were driving them, they might want to hire some better drivers as well.
