This just followed me home today:

Two owners from new (one until last August, then the guy I bought it from), 151k on the clock, still has the original sticker from the supplying dealer on the back. Oh, and it's an Si.

The fenders have a couple of cracks, the front panel has one but they all seem to be well at the "caught in time" stage. Needs a little work - brake job/cleanup on the front, new shocks all round (the original ones are leaking) and the usual oil change for engine and trans. Very little rust I found so far, and no holes that I discovered yet. But I haven't removed the cladding over the rocker panels yet...

And of course with this being a low-mileage Honda, then engine purrs like a kitten.

The PO already threw a bunch of money at it (it has new drive shafts and front suspension arms, plus a timing belt) but it was intended for his son who then changed his mind and decided that this was too old a CRX for him.

The plan so far is to use it as a nice weather DD for when I'm not taking the bike and if I take a shine to it, slowly make it a really nice one. It wasn't quite a bargain as the seller knew exactly what he had, but try finding one in this condition in the first place.

Oh, and while I have everybody's (in)attention, are these OK to run on 5W40 as I'm feeding Rotella T6 to half the fleet already, or am I better off using the 10W40 prescribed in the manual?

I keep thinking a crx would make a spectacular rallycross car.

In reply to WilberM3:

It's in pretty good shape - it has a little bubbling around the lower corners of the windshield and a single small bubble on one of the rear wheelarches.

No cracks in the dash, seats aren't torn and the interior is in pretty nice shape overall.

I'm not sure about that, at least not this model. It doesn't exactly have a lot of ground clearance.

Ask eastsidemav about that. (Short answer: They DO)

Is that.... a STOCK CRX?

The courses I run on don't really need much. My stock Mazda 2 has plenty and the CRX can't ha be that much less. Very lightweight, readily available LSD, limitless motor swap potential and all the suspension you can shake a stick at. The recipe just seems right. Nice car by the way. I think I'd have a hard time rally crossing one that nice. Maybe.

Yup. With the exception of a 1980s audio system.

Loved mine, an 87 Si. I prefer the 1st gen models, call me crazy. Looks really good in white there. My favorite accessory was a rare red reflective panel that replaces the black plastic between the taillights.

Nice grab!

Nice score! I think you will be fine running 5W-40 T6. It's great oil for just about everything, and older Hondas aren't terribly particular about their oil.

How much is "not a bargain", if you dont mind?

berkeley. I'm a 1G whore. I've literally lost count of how many I've had. Never had a running driving white one though, and that's my favorite color for them. Nice score!

Nice. Can i have your louvers?

I had an 85 HF last year and bought an 86 automatic for the lady this year. Trying to buy an 85 parts car and vaguely looking for an EFI donor as well.

Very lightweight, readily available LSD, limitless motor swap potential and all the suspension you can shake a stick at.

Well... The 1g crx is sort of an orphan. The only truly easy swap comes from an extinct integra, and the suspenion is not that well supported since it is torsion bars up front. You can still get it done, but you wont be able to piece something cool together from used honda parts postings on CL for $200 unless you're extremely lucky.

I had no idea they came in white. Mine was red. I don't think we got white in Canada for Sis.

Jealous. I am.

Well, that was a bit of an expensive oil change. No, I didn't muller the engine but it involved a sudden need for an M14x1.5 tap & die set.

It looks like the type of mechanic that a friend of mine labels "gorilla wivva toothache" did the last oil change, of course didn't bother to change the gasket/washer and gave the oil drain plug a good heave-ho. I barely got it out and the thread on the plug was in such a bad shape that the drain plug wouldn't go back in, hence the need for the tap & die set.

Local Napa tops out at M12 so I ended up buying the expensive Harbor Freight box set that goes up to M20. Fortunately HF is pretty close to the house but that still cost me my "Miata playtime" today.

So:

  • oil filter + washer - $7.00
  • oil - $22.00
  • tap & die set so I could actually put some oil back into the engine: $91

That said, the engine sounds happier without a Fram filter and with fresh oil in it and I'm sure that the handling also improved massively as I added the missing 10-15psi to each tire.

No

Funny thing was that one of those "extinct" Integras pulled up next to me at a light when I was on the parts run for the CRX earlier. Mind you, it was a lot more shabby than chic.

I had a black one in Massachusetts in the early '90s. After patching the back fenders I thought I was done with rust on it, then when I went under a bridge the train going over knocked a rock down and cracked the windshield. The glass shop wouldn't put a windshield in it unless I allowed them to weld in new $heet metal to the cowl as it had disintegrated into nothing. I talked them into patching it with fiberglass instead and took that as a reality check that this car wasn't going to be a long-term possession.

Have Integra motor. Have clean 1g Crx. Need to marry two. Though I also have a pile of stock blocks and heads in the basement, and could (prolly should) just build a big 13:1 motor with a nasty cam.

It actually does drive properly (got me to work this morning) but I think I really want to swap out the worn shocks. Still has that go-carty feeling, though.
