Does anyone know of one? I have one in the area but they don't always have what I need. It would be nice if there was a directory compiled somewhere. Google and the like haven't been much help.

unfortunately, there is only one in these parts.. the ones that used to be self service have all gone full service due to insurance regulations
i found one somplace online, well its a regular junkyard directory, and you have to use the search function on your browser, but its the closest I have found... I'll post it once I find it again!
ok, i cant find the one i was using, but car part.com has one that works OK, you have to manually click through the yards in your area, or call because they don't all have website though...

Yeah, I found all those in my previous searches, I was mostly looking for a self service without having to call all of them to see if they are, haha. There is a full service in the area that has the gearbox I need for $350, whereas the self serve has it for $90. Like most of you, I have no problems pulling it myself, especially for the savings.
It's just difficult to search because they all have different names like, U-Pull-It, Grab and Go, Pick-A-Part, and things like that. There's not really a universal term that I can search since only a few call themselves "self-service yards."
Closest that I could find:
http://www.junkyarddog.com/search.htm
Just put in your State, and it will bring up the listings. Most will be full service, but it may be of some help to you.

Pull A Part has an inventory list of cars on their site, but they have no way to tell what's still on those cars.
Ah! Pull A Part, that's another one I hadn't searched for. The closest one is still a few hours from here though.
I found this: http://junkyarding.freeforums.org/portal.php
Its not very active thought.
Maybe we should start one. There are two here in Evansville, IN. Glisson's U-Pull-It and Liberty Pull-A-Part.
I have used these guys a couple of times for body parts: http://www.uneedapart.com/ You make a parts request and then they send to requests to recyclers all over the US and Canada. The individual yards will email you back with a quote if they have the part.
I have had good luck finding them by just searching for u-pull and the city on google, even if they are not named u-pull specifically there is a good chance someone has called it that online on some message board somewhere and then you can track em down with the real name.

Actually, Johnny's in Thomaston, Ct is still a self-service, as far as I know, and they've always been quite reasonable with me.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Is that the one way up on the hill above Thomaston dam?
My favorite, near my old house is:
King of the Road Auto Parts
where they proudly refer to themselves by their initials.
Yes, with a name like KRAP it has to be good.
Back when I owned an MR2, they had 7 of them in various conditions.

Same here only it was new parts dealer Canton Road Auto Parts. Made checks out to "CRAP".
I think this is a fairly new site. LKQ (the big auto recycling company) now has a self-service yard web site complete with a location finder. This is for the yards that they own and operate. They seem to be buying up more independent yards every year. There's also a price list posted as well.

I just assumed that you knew about LKQ in Clayton. I should have asked. My bad. Normally( well, when I have time... ) I'll just drop by to check out the avail. cars and come back w/in the day or so to actually pull the part. They normally at least have a few escorts in the back. You need a tranny for the protege, right?
Yeah, I know about LKQ, they usually have a good selection Escorts and Proteges.
I'm looking for a manual transmission for my Protege LX. LKQ had about 4 last time I was out there.
I wasn't starting this thread specifically looking for the transmission, I've found a lot of them. Mostly I just wanted to know if there was a directory of self serve yards. I just like to have options if one yard doesn't have something. I also really enjoy wandering around in them even when I don't need anything.
I understand the fun wandering around in them. I used to work in one, one of the best job's I've ever had a matter of fact. My buddy used to be a car thief, and as he's told me, its where he learned his former trade as well, how to pull lock tumblers and such.

There is a place in Hebron Kentucky that always advertises on local TV. Been there twice. Each time its always the same scam, you tell then what part you are looking for and they quote how much they are going to charge you, you spend half hour to an hour or however long it takes, you bring it to the counter and then they say, "oh, well, that's not what I thought you meant or (insert some dishonest, crooked business mumbo jumbo here), the cost of THAT part is really (original quote + $$$$). Just absolute crooks.
You'll need to log in to post.
