Quite simple, I am trying to figure out how to get a Miata engine shipped from Lancaster MA to Cumberland MD without paying $600+ that some shipping places just quoted me.
What is the best way to do this?

GRM relay? somebody brings it from MA to Ct.. somebody takes it from CT to Ny.. NY to NJ... etc etc etc
Freightquote.com
I use them for the bit of freight shipping I do.
I just got a quote for 450lbs on a big pallet from Louisville to NB Canada for $440usd. and shipped a similar pallet out to California for a similar amount.
I would expect your distances/weight to be much cheaper, but maybe there are environmental surcharges or tolls to consider as well.
If you get liftgate service that's an automatic $100 in most cases.
Res. delivery is also more $$$. You're better off meeting in a Kmart parking lot with a pickup truck and two friends to help pull it off. (Or pick up at the terminal.

This.... Get it to NJ and I head to MD all the time.
Alright, can anyone get it from MA to NJ?
Trying to pool some resources, if someone can get the motor to Import/replicar Carlisile I have a friend who can get it home for me.

Problem:
Graduating College in a month, hence even weekends are shot with papers and homework until after import/replicar Carlisile. (actually walking day of, have a friend who is going that could get it for me) May consider doing it after that, but with borrowing a car that can load an engine, gas, place to sleep or codriver.. could add up to more money then alternative means.
For instance... Round trip to pick it up is 1000 miles (+/- 10 miles), primary vehicle I can borrow to make the trip is a 2000 ford explorer.
Gas prices, distance, and fuel economy means that I am looking at $250 in gas alone.
I am not trying to get this to my door for free, but seeking better means so that I can save some money (which is problematic as I am job hunting)

I shot an email to Sonic, he heads to MA occasionally. If he can get it to me I can get it to MD

WIN.
There is a small chance I will be passing near there next weekend. I'll keep this in mind if I am, and can bring it down to the Reading PA area, or to JThw8's place. Or, I'll be at Summit Point for Lemons in June
If you can get it near me I can take it the rest of the way. Headin to denmark sunday but just drop it at the house if you are in the area :)
In reply to Apexcarver:
If you can get it to Boston, and pick it up in Baltimore you can get it done for 280$
www.forwardair.com used them plenty in the past, works great if you are near an airport (they dont use airports, they are a truck freight company)

Had a Skyline engine and transmission shipped by Yellow (YRC) from Richmond, BC, Canada to Saint Louis, MO for 300.00. If was if I'm correct, 725 pounds.
Find some one going to the 12 hour in NJ from MA this weekend? I could get it for you and hold it if you are in a pinch. (I am in MA)
The only way to make it cheap is "dock-to-dock."
Meaning someone with a truck get's it to the nearest dock, then it arrives at the dock nearest you, and you go with a truck so they can lower the pallet down in the bed of the truck.
If they have to take a big truck to two separate residential addresses with the equipment to get it on/off, that's why you saw such a high quote.
And for that it has to be on a pallet, VERY well wrapped and protected.
Shipping companies also can't put anything on top of it in the trailer, so it takes up prevents the use of empty space, hence driving the cost up more.
This deal for a $250 motor is really starting to look like it wont end up better enough then dealing with a junkyard about 100 miles from me with one for about $800 to make it worth the effort.
