My 01 Tacoma Pre-Runner is about to be passed off to SWMBO for daily driver duties. Before I pass it on, I would like to catch it up on the deferred maintenance which in this vehicles case includes a set of shocks. I, nor my wife, do not use the truck for offroad use.
Casually browsing around it looks like KYB Mono-Max's will run around $200 to $250, and Bilstein HD's will be around $350. I don't particularly like the typical parts store brands/models. For everyday use would the Bilstein's actually be worth an extra $100 to $150. Secondly, am I missing another good option (Rancho, etc)?

Bilsteins are great on the Tacoma but if you want to go cheap you can use the monroe reflexes.
I had the Bilstein 5100 series on my Tundra and loved them. Still had a nice, cushy OEM ride after install.
We have Rancho RS9000XLs on the Cherokee, and they're great.
I've heard that the 5000 series can be a bit rough, though.

This is what everyone recommends on the 4Runner forum as well, whether staying with stock shocks or a small lift.
If you're going crazy it seems to step up to OME.
Does the SWMBO really need or want the likes of Bilstein shocks? Or would she perhaps be quite happy with the likes of say the KBY GR2 shocks instead?
What you want in a truck is likely not what she wants in a daily driver truck. Make sure you are buying her shocks, not your shocks.
Foxtrapper understood on buying for her. I'm of the mindset to do it once and be done, hence why I'm not interested in the parts store crap. The KYB's are from my basic research vaguely well regarded and Bilsteins are a known commodity. Thanks for the input everybody.
