Backed the Challenge Volvo out of the garage all of 20'. Went inside to wait for travel partner to arrive. Jumped in the car to drive away and THE (singular) key is nowhere to be found. That was 2 hours ago.
Just called the hotel to cancel 2 rooms. If there is any way that I can transfer the meal tickets, lunch, t shirts and banquet to anyone, let me know cause I hate to see it go to waste.
Gutted.

What sort of bullE36 M3 curse has befallen the challenge competitors this year? I'm beginning to get nervous about my drive down...
Locksmith!
Don't give up so easily. Look at all the obsticles you've already overcome. This is merely another one.
Check the coffee pot and refrigerator.
How old are you?
Check your pockets.
Retrace your steps.
I do this E36 M3 all the time.

Rooms are canceled. Teammate went home. I swear I left the key in the ignition cause it was the one place I could not lose it! I feel bad because the guys put a lot of time into this and I cant begin to explain how stupid I feel.
Called locksmith and a replacement key is 3 to 5 days out at $200 and truth be told I am not putting another $$$ into this car since its singular purpose was to drive to the challenge this year.

I have a habit that is very entertaining to others, of putting my car keys on/with another thing that i don't want to forget. Often this is leftovers or other food in a refrigerator, so my keys spend a little time in a fridge. More than most keys, i'd say.
I'm guessing you don't do that, so.. at least you're not carless AND hungry. Bright side. Just sayin'
Aw man...that's really depressing.
Sorry to hear that. That IS a bad day.

WTF. What's the foot traffic like around you, did someone walk off with the keys?!
You're giving up way too easily!
The key has to be somewhere.... on the lawn between the car and house.... on the table by the front door... or maybe fallen down between the seat and console in the car? I’d even look under the car... you know it will turn up somewhere...
Good luck...

Me too, if you're anything like me, it will turn up the day of the Challenge in the very spot you swore you looked at 10 times.. I'm gutted for you..

Bummer... something to be said for the big zip-tie around the steering column method the auction companies often use.
i kind of feel like Patrick is responsible for this since he didn't finish the Wartburg.
Pete, i'm really sorry to hear that. I know the flavor, if not the portion, of that taste.

If you can remove the ignition switch from the lock cylinder you don't need the key anymore, just turn the slot in the switch. Downside is you will have to disable the car somehow to keep it from getting stolen when you aren't around. Not sure how you would get around the steering lock though, got time for a junkyard run?

If he has a manual transmission then he already has a built-in anti theft device
I suspect now that you have stopped looking for the key you will find it almost immediately.
Tomorrow or even tonight is not too late to still jump in and head south.
